Nissan Fairlady Z | PH Private Area

The new Z isn't available for sale from Nissan in the UK - doesn't mean you can't buy one, though

It’s now 20 years since the Nissan 350Z GT4 was launched. Looking back on 2005 now, it was probably a 21st-century high point for the Zed car in the UK. The 350 had launched to widespread acclaim a couple of years earlier - it stood out even in a crowded sector - and then along came the special edition in collaboration with the most famous racing game on the planet. Which was also arguably at its best back then, too.

The GT4 brought a little more power, a limited edition build plaque and a new Ultra Yellow paint for those that wanted it. It didn’t change much because it didn’t need to, and the 350Z continued being a roaring success. Car mad kids wanted them, those who could drive loved them, and not long after Nissan brought the R35 GT-R to the world - it feels like a different planet rather than a different decade.

Now those kids are grown-up millennials, or those adults might want to relive their younger years, and Nissan has nothing to offer the UK customer. We won’t dwell on that for too long, but when the Supra can make a brief comeback, the MX-5 can soldier on and the Civic Type R enjoy a time as about the best driver’s car for £50,000, it’s sad not to have some Nissan representation. Or rather, it’s sad not to have access to some Nissan representation. Because the Z of course exists in other markets outside of Europe, and it remains no less disappointing a few years down the line not to have it here. Probably it says a lot about the strictness of emissions that the case couldn’t be made. That and the general demand for sports cars - a Supra is cool, for example, but when did you last see one?

Anyway, if you are one of those legends who can justify a new-ish two-door sports car right now, is there a treat waiting for you in the PH classifieds - there’s an imported Z for sale. And it looks absolutely wonderful. It’s easy glancing at the specs to be cynical, and to think of this latest Z34 as a mild rework of the 370 with a new turbo V6. There’s some truth in that - but the fact that the design was absolutely nailed shouldn’t be ignored either. Its identity as a Z car is immediately obvious, with smart retro cues alongside modern flourishes. It’s going to get so much more interest than anything comparable.

This one is particularly attention-grabbing with its Rays wheels and Blitz suspension. This is a Japanese import sports car, after all - so naturally it’s modified a bit. White on white with the red leather is a great colour combo, and the stance perfect, so best you like drawing a crowd. And maybe think about rust protection.

The asking price for this 7,000-miler (it passed its first MOT first time in March) is £45k. Or about exactly the same as a UK Supra of similar age and mileage might cost. Nine-speed against eight-speed, V6 against straight six, two turbos against one - what a match up it could be…

It is for sale in the UAE, starting for about £43k new, but it's incredibly rare; I see one about one a year. You see far fewer of them than Supras, which are in turn much rarer than the £40k-and-up American coupes such as the Mustang and Challenger.

I have so much WANT for one of these! The look brilliant I think, love the 'retro' light bar.

So disappointed these don't officially come to the UK but I'm sure like with all interesting Japanese performance cars this one would be an investment. Although if I had the money, it wouldn't be wrapped up in a garage but driven everywhere. After some substantial underbody rust proofing of course.

I didn’t know these existed but I really like that.

I really want to like these but I can't get on with the front-end styling; just like the new supra the headlight design/integration just looks awkward to me. Shame as I love everything else about it, especially the fact the Japanese are still brave enough to put our coupes in the modern day.

Really cool. I've seen a few in Japan. If there was a UK version I'd likely be in my 4th Z.

I'd personally prefer the manual version(and a different colour), but even so, I also have a tank load of want for these for sure. cloud9

Not a fan of the colour and can't make my mind up one the front end. I think the BMW, sorry, Supra looks better personally.

Such a brilliant way to bring back the Z after it became obese in the previous final incarnations.
Just not in ladyboy white though. Blue or this.

Has that got an aftermarket front? My only quibble with it was the big hole at the front (which TBF doesn't seem so bad on the white one, so maybe I'm getting used to it) but your orange one doesn't have it at all...

Its actually longer and heavier than the previous incarnations despite being the same basic car as the 370z. It still looks fabulous though and is faster/more powerful.

That's a customised prototype, not production Z.

The (production) Nismo version as a slightly different front end from the standard cars such as the white one featured.

I would definitely be in the market for one if they offered it in the UK. Plus the VED would be cheaper than the £760 on my 370Z too! hehe

I get why folk are a bit unsure of it from the front, but I think overall Nissan have nailed the shape though.

Love these and as others have said I'm disappointed we don't get them in the UK. That said I'm not sure how popular they are in the states. Recently got back and I only saw 1 over 2 weeks and 4 cities compared to the double digit number of Cybertrucks I saw.

Its actually the heaviest Z ever, they have always been fairly hefty cars for their time as they are a sort of mini Muscle/GT car rather than an out and out sports car except perhaps the 240Z, plus they were always fairly competitively priced so were never going to be built like a McLaren.

We have had a couple of 350Z's, they do feel heavy, but think thats mainly down to control weights than the actual kerb weight, everything needs a bit of effort, clutch, brakes, gearchange, steering. Nissan often can, and do create cars with overly light controls, but not the Z's, they tend to get a very mechanical. Car my 350Z reminded me most of was the six cylinder Austin Healey my brother in law had, he said the same.

White isn't the colour to go for and white wheels as well, not great. However, nice car and probably the car the 370z should have always been.

This one is an auto, but you can get a manual version in it. However the Nismo version is auto only though.
