I searched but couldn't find anything. This has been rumbling away for a while, but seems to be coming to a head. Union Leader either incompetent or something much worse, his successor suggests.

What? The same Len McCluskey who took a personal loan of £400k to buy his London flat without the knowledge of the entire Unite executive board?
The Union that suspended his challenger for the leadership contest, Gerard Coyne, hours before the declaration of the election, after Coyne raised questions about the behaviour of McCluskey and promised to investigate it?

Odd. Seems such a decent chap.

"There is no suggestion Mr McCluskey breached Unite's gifts or hospitality rules because there was no such policy."

It’s relatively easy to spend more money on a building project than the resulting building is worth particularly if the market changes during the development planning/ construction period. This project appears to have been built during Covid so an increase in cost and reduction in value might be expected.

However the amount of the overspend does appear remarkable. You’d also expect him to know if he refunded travel costs - after all private flights aren’t cheap.

It will be interesting to see how the story develops and unbelievable that if costs were artificially inflated they thought they’d get away with it. It’s not as if they were excessive by a small amount.

No chance. He’s 75. Can drag this out for years then use the Ernest Saunders defense

It's not incompetence - it's "snouts in troughs" and it's commonplace across the political spectrum.

O/T I genuinely don't understand why it's ok for people in any position of power (be it the Prime Minister, MPs, Chief Execs, Directors) to be allowed to accept freebies. It's semi-naked corruption, there's literally no above-board reason for it.

As mentioned, and posted in a previous thread on the matter, this story has been dragging on a while now. Good to see it getting a bit of publicity.

It’s difficult not to read a bit into the story without coming away thinking to yourself “what a bunch of absolute s”.

The sums involved, the insane absence of oversight, the astonishing hypocrisy blah blah. Members should be kicking and screaming.

I doubt anything much will come of it.

Also, for what looks like a story about huge sums of money being misspent, hints of embezzlement and or financial irregularities festooned with more than a light sprinkling of politics this thread, like the one before it, is a little quiet. In fairness this place always quietens down when it stops being work time. I’ve never quite got my head around that.

Quite interesting to look at the accounts of the building firm you can see when the flood gates opened and when they stopped as an example (2018-2020 3 years revenue = £98 million, 2021-2023 3 years of revenue = £13 million), Leon would be very disappointed at comrade Len.

I hope he gets it with both barrels, ripping off his members for incredible amounts I would imagine the flights are the tip of the iceberg as this is an £80 million fraud.

Grubby as fk isn't it.

It'll be fascinating to see if there is any Police interest and if so if it looks like anything criminal v that awful "it stinks but was all within the rules" thing that I have a horrid feeling will be the outcome.

The feckless benefitting undeservedly at others' expense? That's the whole purpose of a union, isn't it? Don't know what they're complaining about... hehe

I used to have to negotiate with various Union reps in a previous role. IME how good a Union was varied depending on how good the local and regional “reps” were. Some had a very practical collegiate approach and were willing to work WITH management to try and get a mutually acceptable compromise. Others were power hungry wannabe Scargills .

Indeed. Just a glance of the Register of Ministers’ Gifts and Hospitality is enough to question the whole system. And those are only the ones that are declared…
