In desperate need of help please. (please no "it's your own fault" 'cos I know that already!) I traded my old car in at a large reputable national car dealership last week for a 15 month old car. I paid the difference in full (18.5k). After paying we began to do paperwork. Turns out they don't have the V5 or the reference number from it that I thought you needed to tax it. (Yes I should have asked to see it first etc, I guess I trusted their process and reputation). They said no problem, they would tax it at a post office (using "other details" instead of reference number) and fill in a V62 to generate a new V5 for me. They taxed it remotely and showed me the receipt for the tax (£195) on their phone, and I reimbursed the dealer. (I took a photo of the receipt on their phone). When I got home I noticed the receipt says "V5C retained and sent to DVLA". The tax was indeed bought and it now shows as taxed on Gov.uk site, and DVLA confirm that their records indicate the V5C was sent in to them from post office. I rang the dealer and they are adamant they have completed a V62 (Advising me they are permitted to sign this for me, because I didn't sign one) and that they have not got or had the V5. Back to DVLA, who say that if a V62 had been submitted the £25 would show on their system. And it isn't. So for some reason the dealer are lying and pretending they sent a V62. Why would they do that? If they did have the V5 why not say so, and it's not possible anyway that they took it to the post office because the one they used is 7 miles from the dealer and the man was back in 5 minutes! Car was first regd 4/24 and DVLA search says new V5C issued 18/6/25 (why would a dealer apply for a new V5, I thought they put it into trade so it doesn't show as an extra owner?). I bought vehicle 17/7/25. Dealer reluctant to speak to me now, not answering calls (I believe my details pop up on their screen when I phone!) and I can't trust what they say anyway. I'm trying to join dots- maybe they have old V5 at head office but thought if they tell me there'll be a delay applying for my V5 they think I'll be put off? (even though I'd already paid in full?!) Or maybe there is no V5, post office are dodgy (dealer says it's run by a "trusted family member!) and it'll save them £25 when I have to submit a V62? (although DVLA say that if they don't get a V5 when it's supposedly been submitted at post office they would "investigate"). The whole thing seems very fishy. I would point out that it is a very well known and big national car dealership and nowhere can I see in any forums or reviews any instances of them being dodgy in this way. Also worth pointing out they didn't give me a sales invoice until I chased, and when I was emailed it it seems my signature was forged after I'd left the dealership. DVLA can't explain what's happened or provide me with any more information. Dealer is adamant they sent in a V62. Does anyone have any thoughts on what's going on or advice on what I should do? Really appreciate any help at all.

I think you re jumping to conclusions that the dealer is lying, and maybe need to be a bit more patient.

If you bought the car on 17/7 it s so far only been two full working days since then. What date did they tax it for you?

Personally I think it s expecting a bit much for the V62 to get to the DVLA second class post, be processed, registered and recorded on their system as received in only a couple of days.

It normally takes them at least a couple of weeks to process V5 applications using the snail mail method.

Yes I suppose I am a bit impatient. But thing is, as DVLA have advised me, they would KNOW on their system if a V62 has been submitted. You can't submit one without paying the £25 fee, and this generates a receipt, a reference number and that reference number is on DVLA system. And in this case it isn't. So what other conclusion can I draw except that they're lying, maybe not maliciously but their story doesn't add up. Vehicle was taxed on day of purchase, 17/7/25 by the way, before I drove off. (And DVLA can confirm that it was indeed taxed at that time on that date).

The dealer used a well known person to tax the car. It would have cost them an extra £50 but quicker and easier than a V62. Chill, it's all fine and nothing to worry about.

Huh? I don't understand?! Curious what you mean by "well known person"?! and extra £50? Are you aware of my "case"?!

No idea about your "case" but it's taxed and you'll get a V5 shortly. A quick search on Facebook will explain. Like I said, nothing to worry about and no wrong doing by the dealer.

Really? If you're right you've taken away my sleepless nights (and solved a riddle DVLA can't!) What do I search for on Facebook? Really appreciate your help smile

Google Road Tax Martin and all will become clear. Also DVLA wont know they've got a V62 for your car until they receive it, if the garage posted it on Friday then there's every chance it hasn't reached them yet.

Two working days biglaugh

Calm down. If you haven't had a V5 through in 3 more weeks then fill in a V62 and re-submit. It doesn't matter unless you want to sell the car immediately.

Okay. So I googled and read a bit about Road Tax Martin and it's starting to make some sense. Just curious how taxing the vehicle will also generate a V5? Or do they have to send a V62 in separately as well for that?

The dealership will sort that bit out and you'll get the V5 quicker than doing it by post

Of course it adds up. DVLA simply have not yet received the V62 which was sent by post.
