Hello all,
Sitting here staring at the order confirmation sent by Richard Marlow today. Can't believe I've actually done it - first 6 stages on order.
Only spoke to Ultima this morning after seeing a red GTR on some VMax footage yesterday - talk about an impulse purchase!! So whoever that is.......it's your fault!
Built a Midtec Spyder in the early 90's and nothing since, so here we go.
Richard tells me that apart from the roll cage (I've gone for the RAC cage) there are no spec decisions to be made (engine/gerabox mounts etc) at this point.
Is this your understanding?
I intend this to be a trackday special but also a european tourer - too much of a compromise??
A long way off at the moment but would 550ish BHP keep me amused without wanting more?

Just picked a figure out of the blue really - I did it before with the Midtec, spec'd a mild engine and then riped it out after a few months to go for something hotter (a whole 120bhp!!). I'll take steers - I guess there will be a trade off power/drivability.
What am I used to? Well the Maser is the current weekender. only 370bhp (all seeming to come in the middle of a corner! 'dem turbos!!) But a year in P1 has given me a few toys to play with. You realise though how sterile things become when governed by electronics - sometimes you don't know who's driving!!

Prep the garage, refresh the tool box etc......
I get the Build DVD soon - I'm hoping to do a factory spec job - no customising. Are there any areas where one has to get creative or can the factory supply everything?

All you want can be sourced from the factory.
If you want to do track days you may want to consider a Stack digital dash which has lap timing facility on it. Whilst I believe you are not supposed to do timing on track days you do not need an external sensor just press the button on the dash as you cross the line each lap.

Ive got 3 weeks until mine is ready to ship, with 2 weeks shipping to Hong Kong on top, but have been advised to send the engine with the chassis to avoid registration problems, so may have to wait a couple more weeks for the engine to go US>UK... I thought 12 weeks was a long time, but 14 is an eternity.

Peter, you've done the right thing. I see that you live in Surrey as I do, so if you need any help, advice, or reassurance at any time during your build, then get in touch. I have built one and half Ultimas; the half is going up to the factory on Monday for the body prefit.

12 weeks?? Ouch. That means maybe 4 months from when I order mine to when I actually receive it (12 week till shipping + 1 month to aussie).
And I wanted to get started sometime this summer.
I guess I've been wanting to get an ultima for 3 years, so another 6 months won't hurt.

Pete - you regarding choices at this stage, you could do with considering what gearbox you're going with and the position of the lever.
The G50 can be mounted with the shifter on the right, or centrally. If centrally mounted then a bracket needs welding into the chassis for the rod linkage.
If right, then no problem, same goes for Getrag option which is centre mounted, but cable operated.
Good choice by the way
PS. Blame GMan, I think it must have been his Reg GTR you saw.

With the amount of work you did on the first one Alan, I think you can safely say you've done the equivalent of building two

I was advised that the G50 box was fine for my modest requirements and looking at the price difference, that seems like the most suitable solution to me. So nothing to do but twiddle thumbs, white wall and grey floor the garage (well I might as well start as I mean to go on!!) I'm going on sat 15th to Donnington so I hope to have my first ride in one there.....perhaps from one of you??!! He-he. There I'll be after some advice on engine and ancillary choices. Watch out!!

Just tell them that max rpm is 5k, the static should be done at 1/2 throttle IIRC, so job done

Oh I see, reading your post again you say that G50 can be centre or right shift. I thought that right was the only option. Does the extra/different linkage to mount the shift centrally have a downside, perhaps not such a crisp accurate change? Excuse these early questions as my knowledge is next to zero. Is the centre mount linkage a factory option?

No worries Pete, the central change is a factory option as the US market pretty much makes it mandatory to have a centre shift! The right hand shift doesn't feel weird in the slightest (well, I didn't think so), but the central location is more 'normal' (with the exception of single seater drivers perhaps
) The linkage should work just as well as the right hand shift (just a slightly more protracted route to the gearbox), just make sure it's polished an lubed in the right places. You'll get to that bit in a few months
