I’ve had one of these installed in my E28 BMW for just over two years now. Useful for DAB, Bluetooth and streaming etc whilst being in keeping with the dashboard.

All was well, including on a recent European trip, until a few weeks ago when it suddenly stopped producing any sound! The unit switches on ok, and changes between functions but there is not a peep coming out of the speakers. It’s as if it’s muted (it’s not). I suspect it to be the unit rather than the wiring or speakers, and of course the warranty has expired. I disconnect the car battery for a while and reconnected but that obviously made no difference.

Before I go to a specialist to test it does anyone have any experience of this unit, or any observations? If it has failed it’s quite disappointing for £400 and only light use over two summers.

Thee are a number of ways of muting the sound - check the manual for them all. The speaker wiring connector on the back of the unit may have become disconnected. If not, it can only be an internal issue.

Thanks, I did pull it out and couldn’t see anything obviously disconnected at the back. I’ll check through the manual again - did you mean specifically for this SQR 46 that there are several ways of muting it, as well as the short press of the on/off switch?

Yes, I think there is a general mute volume. Then I think there is a speaker mute for when you are using external amps (it turns off the internal amp). And finally I think there will be a mute option or control associated with using a phone/calls.

Have a good read through the manual to double check.

I have a similar problem, all functions are working but no sound, if I un-plug the speaker cone got and plug it back in it works but the next time I turn it off and back on there is no sound?

Interesting that you have the same issue. I’ve been led to believe that it’s likely to be the internal amp that has failed. I still haven’t done anything about getting mine sorted, but have been given details of someone that may be able to fix it.

Check your fuses. The unit takes a 10A fuse and if it's blown, the unit will power on but you'll get no sound . Also check the inline fuse on your wiring harness if you have one. Had this happen to me after two years of use.

Thanks, does the unit have its own fuse somewhere? I was under the impression that it didn’t but happy to be corrected.

I was sitting in the car in my garage earlier resetting the 1980’s trip computer time and date, and after doing that idly switched the stereo on…of course it burst into life. Switched off and on a few times and currently it seems back to normal!

The car was recently away having some gearbox work done and I suspect the battery was disconnected for a few days. I wonder if this has somehow done a reset? I did try disconnecting the battery when it first stopped producing sound, but only for an hour at most. Perhaps doing it for an extended period of time has made a difference. Anyway, happy days.
