Anyone know where I can find out about driving schools that make use of a closed-to-the-public mock road system layout?

Where you can learn the basics before getting battered on the public roads.

Thanks in advance.

I knew that would come eventually!

Its not for a 'kid' as such.

TRL at Crowthorne Berks, have a fantastic road system with roundabouts painted lines and even a set of traffic lighs at a cross roads junction. It is set within a pine forest and has their test track sorrounding it. They call it their 'small road system'. I do not know how you would get to use this facility but a call to their general number would pay dividends. I know they do occasionally use it for training disabled drivers with specially adapted controls.
It would very much depend on what you wanted to use it for.

Thanks madcop,

Found it......

"All for the inclusive price of £48 per session. Three sessions are recommended to obtain maximum value from the courses.

Courses are conducted on SUNDAYS from 09:00 - 12:45

Pupils from Aldershot, Fleet, Farnborough, Camberley and Sandhurst areas will be picked up from home and returned after the course.

Pupils from other areas to meet course instructors at the TRL Security Office, Old Wokingham Road, CROWTHORNE, Berkshire by 08:45"

Seems to be run through Three Counties Professional Driving Instructors' Association.

I'll give them a try.

I'm glad it worked out for you.
The road system is fantastic and if you are getting tuition thrown in, then the price must be well worth it.

There are steep hills, 'T' Junctions, in fact everything that you would wish for except other drivers (unless they happen to run a couple of cars at a time. I don't know!) Even the odd Roe deer to avoid.

I haven't looked at your profile yet, so I hope it isn't too far away for you.

Just looked, so a bash straight up the M3 isn't going to be out of the question. You could do it in an hour or less

Is this to gain experience in a car BEFORE one takes their test??

As an alternative - particularly before one is old enough to drive on the road try the 'Early Drive' run by Octagon (Brands Hatch, Snetterton etc). A bit more expensive £65 I think but lasts all morning/afternoon in an Audi A2 - A great Birthday present for the under-age PH'er, my son loved it.

Have Fun

Oh - nearly forgot, it takes place on part of the Motor Racing circuit which makes it all the more exciting for young Petrolheads.

Don't laugh if any of you ever meet my wife.....

But it is for her to try and get the basics of driving the car before learning the skill required to drive it on public roads.

In the past, it has been the language barrier (she is Polish) but her English is good enough to really understand what she is being taught.

She has tried getting the basics driving the car around a friends farm on the gravel tracks, but that really does not help with junctions and various manoeuvres. Plus with me next to her, it creates the wrong atmosphere.

(the worse that happened was the hire car went through a hedge and created a new entrance to the field! )

She wants to give it a go, if it does not come naturally she will not pusue it, as I think the UK roads scare the hell out of her. Personally I don't know what she is thinking, I have driven in Poland, and that is an adrenalin rush!

Hopefull they will not turn her away because she is too old!

I might let you know how she gets on.

edited to make mental note that reading the whole thread REALLY is worth it on occasions
