Alice has been given a prime slot on Channel 4 reporting on the F1 races. She’s already giving her views on the sacking of Christian Horner, I know that she has been around racing for a while but how much of that time around F1 ?

I think that’s unfair.

I believe that we need to see more women in the sport, at different levels, in the way that we are witnessing a huge transformation in Women's football - although not convinced about some of their pundits.

Of course, they need to be there on merit, and I actually think Alice Powell is a very good commentator - with the benefit of having raced fairly successfully at a reasonable level.

If racing credentials are a requirement, Jamie Chadwick has the most credibility, having driven and won in multiple categories.

I thought C4 started down that road when they hired Steve Jones. I can’t see any other reason he has the job.

The thing is, that’s what Channel 4 is there for. It was in its remit from the start. Catering for minorities and cultural diversity.
I do accept that doesn’t sit very well with how ‘we’ view F1.

Yes to be fair thats why i gave up on channel 4 coverage and brought sky. Albeit sky increasing seem to be hiring to tick boxes.

I can tolerate Naomi cause we also get Nico. Whose just brilliant!

Ditto wherever Danica is, we tend to get Jenson and/or Nico to offset her

Pinkham is probably marginally better than Lazenby
Brookes is pretty bloody good too. Maybe a slight step behind Leigh MacKenzie

What does it matter?

No different than you "giving your views" on someone else giving their view - only she is getting paid and travelling the world doing so.

F1TV gets Ruth Buscombe who is bloody brilliant.

FWIW I really like Alice Powell. She's been racing a long time and knows what she's talking about. I want more people to be interested in F1, and if she makes it more relatable then it's win win.

I do think it's quite revealing that some folk call it tokenism. Was Billy monger a token disabled person? Does Alex Brundle get his job on F1TV just because of his Dad? Neither of these two have raced in F1 either.

Come off it. Had they employed Shamima Begum I would concede you have a point. AP? No.

For the last 3 years she's worked in talent development for Alpine working closely with their team to spot and develop future talent, she completed in W series which was an F1 support formula for a few years, she's worked as a commentator for F1 TV (the direct to consumers F1 streaming service we are officially denied here in the UK), since 2020 she's worked for Sky Sports commentating on Formula 2, which is the current support series and involves spending time in and around the F1 paddock. As a racing driver she has competed in 10 different championships over 12 years, winning 3 titles, and anyone who has read F1 biographies will know that motorsport is a tight knit community with lots of personal and business relationships transcending different formula.

Sure there are plenty of ex F1 drivers and team managers out there who have more experience than her, but a pundit is first and foremost a journalist who needs to be good on camera or in front of a microphone, which most of them are not based on the wooden interviews they give each week.

She has probably spent more time in and around the F1 paddock than Billy monger or Steve Jones before they started working for C4. But then, of course, she is - shock horror - a woman, so that is clearly the only reason she got the gig right?

100% this. Alice has been working in and around the guts of F1 and the other series that run during the weekend for years, as well as being a very accomplished driver herself.
