Pistonheads being the foundain of all knowledge that it is, advice required pls..

I recently acquired a '94 Golf 1.8. Under normal driving conditions, the temperature gauge sits at ~85 degrees, but, on stopping and idling (eg traffic jam), the temperature rises to and remains at ~100-110 degrees (approx 3/4 way up the temp gauge) with the fan coming on and off regularly. Is this normal for this engine, and if not, is it likely to do any damage and should I change the thermostat, or is this an irrelevantly small rise in temperature?

Pete.

I can only speak from experience, so I'd seek further advice if I were u.

For what it's worth, my Vauxhall Cavalier does that in summer. Never been a problem though.

That's totally fine, all GOlfs sit about there. You can change the thermostat if you like for cheap peace of mind but as long as the fans are coming on it is working for now.

Im not sure i can help, but ill try. My '87 Golf GTI (mk2, as opposed to your Mk3?) sits around 70 - 80 degrees in normal driving but if sat in traffic, it rises to around 100-110 degrees. Ive never had a problem and apparently this is normal.

As long as the fans are coming on, i wouldnt worry too much! []

This kinda makes sence as I'm told that mine (a Mk3 Driver) has the same 1.8 engine as the Mk2 GTI. I recon its probably OK (the fan comes on and off fine), but I'll keep an eye on it, and if I happen to have the Rad off sometime, I'll stick a new thermostat on (its a pain to get to) - I've just had bad experiances with cooking cars before so im probably jus stressing to much...

Cheers,

Pete.

Just to clarify, mines a 1.8 8v GTI.

I shouldnt worry too much then, 110degrees shouldnt be a problem. Keep an eye on it tho.

BTW im talking OIL temperature - what temp are you talking, WATER? if so, i dont have a digital water gauge, jsut a needle, but in traffic that has sat at about 3/4 and sometimes a little higher, with no ill effects.

If youre really worried, it might be worth making a post here> www.clubgti.com/forum

there are some very knowledgable people on there...

Hope this helps mate....

Thanks again,

Pete
