Petrol prices over the years

There's a petrol station on the outskirts of Chester that's just been knocked down. So with the magic of Street View, I thought I'd check the prices over the years:

April 2009:


May 2025:



And all the dates in between it shows:



It's interesting (well, I found it interesting) that it was almost exactly the same price in April 2025 and June 2012.

Prices now are lower than that 2009 price in real terms I think. Adjusted for inflation the petrol price would be >£1.50

Well I am much older and remember paying 42p a litre for petrol for my Fiat Uno, as a student in Bristol in '91ish. But as it only had a 40 or 45 litre tank there was always change from £20 when filling it up. Though, as a student, I usually just chucked a tenner in

Video library - don’t think I’ve seen that as a service provided by a petrol station. Imagine being stuck waiting for a pump because someone can’t decide what movie to rent for the evening

I can remember standing at the pump filling my car when someone was sounding off about the government "Well I didn't vote them in!" brought about by petrol hitting a pound per gallon! 1976 or 1977

Me too, my dad said he’d give up driving if it went above £1 a gallon (he didn’t). Even I (60 year old) can remember filling up my Honda 70 for £1.50.

My Dad in 1960's would always put 4 gallons in the morris 100, it came to £1
In 1970 I remember filling up my Lambretta (sorry) for 35p per gallon

I can remember watching open-mouthed as a man on a nearby pump put £60 of fuel into his A8, was probably 2003. Seemed an unthinkable amount of money to spend on petrol!

Just like "If it gets to a pound a pint, that's it, I'm not drinking in the pub anymore" ! Oddly enough, no one did.

I found myself surprised at petrol being below £1 per litre in 2009. I don't know why. I remember in 2001 £5 giving me 1/4 tank in my mini.

Takes some working out to see if things were any better, my first weeks wage from British Coal in 1980 was £60 as a 16 year old. Beer was 40p a pint, 20 Benson and Hedges 70p, fish and chips £1, Mars bar 15p, rent 6 quid a week. First house (modest 3 bed terrace) £8500 in 1984 cost today in same area £170,000.

I'm sure a lot of people will remember the fuel protests of the year 2000.

Petrol was about 80p per litre at that point.

I remember hitting the £100 fill up of super unleaded in my old 90 litre tank e34 M5 about the same time...and then the first €200 fill up of 102 RON in Germany about a decade later

I remember my dad buying "a pound's worth" of petrol. About 3 gallons at the time.

I was going to post something similar, can’t believe it’s 25 years ago now. From memory the price dropped to about 72p per litre after the protests

Going from Gallons to Ltrs at the pumps was the biggest consumer rip off ever, Prices got hiked and now no one knows the true price.

I can remember that happening, but not what year it did.
