Decent Wooden Door Gloucestershire
Discussion
I need a new back door. I am disillusioned with composite so want real wood, painted, supplied and installed.
My one quote for 1 door so far is £3500 which is more than I was hoping to pay.
Does anyone know any companies in Gloucestershire or Worcestershire that can supply and fit a decent timber door and frame.
Thanks

You’ve done well to get a quote even if it’s not to your liking !
We are in Buckinghamshire and in 2021 managed to find a local joinery firm to make us a new back door in French oak along with a new frame - supply and fit was £1,500.
We now need another door plus a set of patio doors and I can’t even find someone locally to even quote - the first company went out of business so perhaps they weren’t charging enough.

Be interesting to know why disillusioned with composite. That was me with our old front door. The door itself was OK, but the frame and side panel just didn't feel right nor strong.
Replaced with a Rock Door from a firm in Kidderminster and the difference is night and day. The frame is properly fitted, steel reinforced, and the door frame and side panel are bolted together with another steel connection plate. Solid as.
I don't have a recommendation for a wooden door fitter. The last one I used managed to fit a stable door with the rebate between top and bottom doors the wrong way round. Fortunately quickly accepted the goof and refitted same day.
3500 for a single wooden door is silly money / don't want the job / or something very special.

I'd start the other way around and find the local fitter first and then choose the door, ideally with some advice from them. My one quote for 1 door so far is £3500 which is more than I was hoping to pay.

Nice wood doors can be hit and miss when it comes to warping with some brands being more prone than others. Even with smaller back doors. The local fitter will have a fair idea as to which ones are more stable.
Also, the door service usually entails them renting a local man with a hammer who no one else was employing or sending their own chaps in from far away to fit to a set timeframe.
With it being a new frame also, it's a much simpler site job as the the frame aperture can be measured up on site and it can then be trimmed and sealed off site along with a standard door sealed and pre fitted. It's then just a quick site job of removing the old frame and fitting the new.

I'm near Blue33 and we lost our handyman during Covid. To call him a handyman is an insult, he was an absolute craftsman but over the last 20 years he has always done things like our doors when we've moved. This time I had to shop around but all the good carpenters were snowed under with endless jobs from the quality house restorers and developers so I've ended up replacing the 4 back doors myself. One was a new extension so perfectly standard door and frame that just dropped in. Another was French doors but in a relatively modern extension so was a basic fit. The utility was just trimming a standard door into an existing standard frame. The 4th was a pig. A rotted, tiny pair of French doors in a low height opening being replaced with a standard door. I had to rejig the hardwood frame kit while sourcing some hardwood planes and true timbers to help pack the frame out to the wall and then cut the door down to fit. I sat for 2 months waiting to be in the mood for that one! I've always used a company called Fine Doors in Essex. I used them years ago in London and they were just really nice and easy people to deal with so I've kept using them.

We had 2 composite doors fitted to our place in Devon. So far both door slabs have had to be replace under warranty, we get repeated issues with water ingress and locks not working because the slap has warped. On one door the facing started to peel away from the frame.Replaced with a Rock Door from a firm in Kidderminster and the difference is night and day. Maybe find a UK company online and get it delivered then use my builder to find a chippy to quote and get it fitted.
Last time I bought a wooden front door it was about £100 not fitted but even with inflation it would only be £200-£250 now, £3500 seems crazy expensive.
This, I've been using/specifying this firm for over 40 years - they will happily deliver anywhere and their work is excellent (look at how long they have been going). Just find a local fitter or DIY it.Last time I bought a wooden front door it was about £100 not fitted but even with inflation it would only be £200-£250 now, £3500 seems crazy expensive.

To be fair the door supplier we went to was high end (Cheltenham and Cotswolds where money appears to be no object)
£3500 for a back door still seems mental. I get it with front doors where you're likely to be having the door made etc but back doors are smaller and generally standard sizes without the need to be part of a grand facade. I'd generally think a good hardwood door and frame would be between £400-£800 and fitting done in a day and well under £1000 worst case.

Its a custom size (thanks Cotswolds) needs the frame and a cat flap.
It's fun isn't it.
A good hardwood new door usually has enough spare wood to be cut down. I had to take over 100mm off one door but it wasn't an issue like it would be a composite.
You can also try reclamation as you'd be amazed just how many old doors were still standard sizes. The yard in Rissington used to have loads of doors taken from local Victorian hobbit homes and if they haven't warped in 150 years then they aren't going to rush to start now even if one side is centrally heated. Just don't use cheap hinges as they're heavy old buggers being made of non force grown modern timber.
Adrian also makes up doors from reclaimed timber like Cox's used to. And he'll have people to fit. It won't be cheap but it will be very nice.

For us, our 'local' branch was next door to Pontrilas Sawmills (I think they are associated companies). We've a front door they made for us. I think the conversation initially went something like - "We can't take your measurements - we need to come and measure up", whereupon I said "You can't, I haven't built the hole for it yet..."
So they built to my sizes and I needed to ensure my hole was the right size for the door - all went in well. We went to their showroom / fabrication area and had seen our door as it was being built up.
Still with some bits of work to do:

I fitted the current door and frame myself, but am time poor at the moment, so i need someone who can do it for me and I need to source a good quality planked door ideally prefinished. The door I am replacing came ready hung in the frame.

Might be worth speaking to Adrian. He was originally one of the big local builders alongside the Williamsons so don't forget to turn up with some food smeared down the front of non branded clothing and non matching shoes so as to avoid the risk of mistaken for a Londoner.
