Hotel recommendations Auxerre France and Dijon France
Discussion
Its all a bit of a lottery on Booking.com and Trip advisor with reviews so varied I don't know what to choose .
Two nights in each location September , close to town centre , walk in preferable , not too many stairs if possible .
Middle aged couple budget usually about EUR 180 per night .
Recommendations from experience please .
See my other post .
Thank you

Dijon town centre is pretty grim, especially anywhere near the train station. If you have a car, look south along the Burgundy wine road to Beaune. Plenty of great hotel/gastro restaurants...we have stayed at Ermitage de Corton and Chateau Chaulon a few times...and try the local Aloxe Corton.
Another vote for Beaune over Dijon.
Stayed here a couple of years ago and would recommend it. Secure parking if that is a consideration.

To close this thread and thank you for the recommendations .
We stayed at the following after twice having a booking cancelled on us , fortunately before we left . Not happened to me before .
Beaune : Hotel de la Cloche, got quite concerned when we checked in , not very pleasant lady and it looked really quite run down inside the reception. Got shown to comfort grand room on ground floor with outside space and a little garden it was lovely . We did not have breakfast , parking on site is easy and secure , albeit narrow entrance . 5 min walk into town. Actually a great stay if we booked the same room again , I would go back tomorrow .
Auxerre: Hotel Les Marechaux. Big old chateaux style building . 5 mins walk from centre of town . Good bits, easy parking and close to town , nice little garden and sit out area especially if on ground floor , as we were . Very nice outside pool that was clean and warm and we sat there just yesterday and I swam , seems odd now we are back in the UK weather ! Never ceases to amaze me 250 miles into France and different weather all together .
The bad bits : The owners are renovating the building and despite telling me there was no work over the summer, I met quite a few builders . Our room was booked as a top option, it was fairly run down . The carpet reminded me of a pizza hut restaurant in Stockport, the bit of carpet by the salad bar.. Check in was really poor , very grumpy rude woman. I though ok lets make a cup of tea and reset, no milk so I ask , she gets some but is vert dismissive of my request . We go out for a walk at 4pm and as I pass her smiling and radiant face , I ask her if she can get someone to reattach the curtains in our room as they are falling down . No she replies its too late and will have to wait until tomorrow . Guess what in the two days we stayed it was never done . When we checked out they asked if we had a nice stay, I replied I liked the town very much , and the fellow who was now there said what about the Hotel. I said not so much and he ignored my reply and just made up the bill in silence . We would not go back to that Hotel albeit the town is quite nice . There is actually an Ibis Styles right by the river and bridge where we could see outside balconies overlooking the river , that may have been a better bet .

Too late for the OP but we have stayed at Chateau de Rigny a couple of times, it's 26 miles from the A31 at Dijon.
It is fantastic, and not overpriced IMO for what you get.
A beautiful chateau with extensive grounds on the banks of the Saone. Outdoor heated pool, on site parking, great restaurant and lovely room all in period style. It makes you feel like royalty! One thing is that if you travel in shorts and trainers it's best to change into smart casual before arrival as you will be greeted by staff wearing DJ's, but it's not needed to wear similar attire for the meal!

A bit further south easily accesible from A 39 near Lons le Saunier is this place which was excellent. Restaurant, outdoor pool, lovely countryside
Domaine du Revermont - Logis Hotel
When travelling from the south I prefer to leave Autoroute 6 at Lyon and use A39 to join A31 north of Dijon. This avoids the A6 North of Lyon which is always busy and not a relaxing drive
I hope this helps someone planning their next trip
