New York in September
Discussion
I’m off to New York in September for 5 days, one of which will be spent at the Ryder Cup. I’m looking for ideas of things to do for the other 4 days. Visiting the Statue of Liberty is on the list as I’ve not managed to do this on previous trips, but I’m open to other suggestions.
Also interested in good restaurants and nice / unusual bars for relaxing drinks in the evenings.
Thanks.

I wouldn't plan too much, its a great place to just wander and randomly discover. Having said that, here are a few suggestions:

I was there in Sep 24 for 5 days.
Definitely walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Dumbo.
There is plenty to do there!
Perhaps try and see if you can get a table at 11 Madison Park? Some of the friends I went with did that and had an amazing time.
We did the bridge at sunrise - later in the year but worth getting up forDefinitely walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Dumbo.

our friends went to 11 Madison that's the plant based one ?
we went to a place called Manhatta which had stunning views of the city at night 50 storeys up or something
would recommend that
Rockafella centre but get priority tickets - the Q almost went around 3 sides when we got the but we just jumped it and went straight in and that experience goes all the way to the top
We were there in July, only 2 and a half days though, bought a City Pass for 5 experiences.
We used it for Big Red Bus, hop on hop off, 911 Memorial and Museum, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and Intrepid Museum.
Intrepid Museum is good as there is also a submarine there, USS Growler, which you can walk through. Always sobering to see the inside of a sub and to imagine what it would be like serving in one.
The first US sub to carry cruise missiles, which had to be launched with the sub on the surface.
We found that rather rushed and each experience would have been better as one a day.

I would say get the boat to Dumbo and walk back across the bridge, you get to walk towards Manhattan then.Definitely walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Dumbo.

Other things we did and enjoyed:
Natural history museum
Top of the rock
Walk the highline.
Intrepid museum
9/11 memorial is intense, educational not enjoyable but we didn't complete the entire thing. We'd reached our capacity for tragedy after about 3 hours.
Ultimately though we were a little disappointed with Manhattan. When you're in it you can't see it, but also because it is a concrete jungle it never gets quiet. You'll hear sirens, horns and trucks 24/7.
Happy we did it, but don't need to go back.

I can imagine in September Long Island is rather nice for a few days along the Hamptons etc.
Thought I'd have a laugh and look at pricing. Flight prices are not too bad, however tickets are more expensive than the flights!!!
We live in Southampton and it is lovely in the summer. I'd recommend a drive through the Hamptons all the way to the end of Montauk if you can spare a day. That said, we leave during the summer because it gets busy with tourists and other things. Thought I'd have a laugh and look at pricing. Back to NYC though, there are a couple of us on the forum that live here so can offer advice, but most of the NY threads cover the same suggestions.
