VXR8 roof lining
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm not sure if this has been talked about yet, or indeed happened to anyone else.
The lining on our VXR8 has detatched itself from the roof. It looks like the foam backing has perished. I initially tried temporary fixes but to no avail.
I've contacted an auto upholstere. He's saying the board that the material is attatched to needs come out of the car, which is apparently a nightmare.
Has this happened to anyone else's HSV and if so what did you do?
TIA

Yeah had started to happen in mine VERY slightly so I put the feelers out to see what people were saying and almost everyone said slight fixes never cut it.
Like with trying to get to the antenna on the roof (ugh) it's a bit of a job with all of it needing to come out.
As they've said to you its got some cardboard(ish) support in it which if you break is apparently a MASSIVE pain in the backside to source. So you'll either want some pros, or at least a couple of you to hold and maneuver.

From putting VE commodore headliner into Ebay and Youtube, has come up with this place in South Australia.
All VE-VF Commodores were built in South Australia.

I returned the lining in our VE (same body) Calais V that had the roof mounted DVD.
It was straight forward to remove it, though quite a lot of the interior panels have to be removed. A pillar, all the lower sill panels, the b-pillar trims and the C-pillar trims.
The upper roof door trims come off. The Jesus handles have to be removed.
However. Because you are working around airbags, the SRS has to be disabled. First, move the seats rearward, lower the front seats all the way down, and put the seat backs all the way back as flat as possible. Then disconnect the negative terminal first (always) and isolate the battery post to prevent accidental contact of the negative lead if it moves back. A short over the post or a spare terminal cap.
The roof lining will be manoeuvred out either the drivers door or passenger door. It needs two people working together well to get it out. One person with practice. It does need to be ever so slightly curved to remove it so be super careful not to crease it or it’s wrecked.
As for covering it, these lots on cleaning off the forbidden cheese snack with lots of methods. What ever works for you.
I use 3M High Strength 90 adhesive.
When applying the foam backed fabric, lay it over the roof panel. Gently work it into the shape with clean hands. Mould it as best you can to shape. Stretch some bits first. Work it to shape. Then trim leaving about an inch around the edge. Then rather than completely stuffing it up from there, you fold over one half from front to back. Apply the spray adhesive in roughly 30mm strips. Let it tack a bit and then with one hand under the fabric, gently work it down onto the panel. Continue bit by bit with that method. Work down the centre outwards. Slowly. Don’t let the curved up edges stick down before doing the recessed bits around the Jesus handles.
Then once, say the front half is done, you fold over the back half and repeat the method.
Then trim up the edges to shape and fold over the panel. Cut reliefs into the corners but never right up to the edge. Stop short.
I bought the suede roof liner off eBay and have done three of my cars with it now. It’s bloody brilliant. I also retimed the factory puller trims that were fabric covered with faux suede. Came up so good. You can buy the knitted foam backed roof liner in black, grey or beige.
These roof liners went in via the front window during manufacture.
