F10 M5 Engine Oil
Discussion
Hi,
I’m wanting to change the oil on my F10 m5 as an interim change. The dealer shows Shell 0w30 on the last service invoice.
I wanted to keep the same oil as the car is under extended warranty.
Struggling in finding a matching oil.
Nearest I can find is below:
https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/shell-helix-ultra-p...
https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/shell-helix-ultra-e...
https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-...
Ideally I would like to be able to buy it tomorrow or Monday.
Any help appreciated.

So either Castrol 5w30 or 0w30 would be fine with LL04 spec?
With the Shell I’m not quite as sure. There seems to be a fair few variants,
If my engine were to obliterate itself would having Castrol over Shell be an issue and 5 instead of 0? I.e 4k ago they put Shell in it

I have just completed an interim service on our X5M ( same engine ) and used Castrol Edge 0w-30 LL which is LL-04 spec. Have also used millers nanodrive 5w-30 in the past which is also LL-04 spec, I just normally browse Opie oil by spec then make a selection. Be aware that the OEM oil filter has a M badge on it, I make sure I use OEM, as like you i’m still under extended warranty.
A lot of the M5 & M6 nerds on the forums recommend a high-quality thicker 5W-40 or even 5W-50 oil over what the manufacturer recommends for the S63TU engine.
The 0W-30 is a very thin oil for these engines and they get super-hot (oil operating temp is 95-100C...). A 0W-30 would only be optimal if you're in a regular very cold climate like Scandinavia or Canada etc.
This is because manufacturers oil recommendations are balanced towards meeting emissions/CAFE requirements/legislation and not what's absolutely best for your engine long-term. Once the cars get over 5+ years old, they don't care. They're purely in the business to sell new cars to the rinse-and-repeat customers.
Ever since I've taken ownership of mine I've been using Liqui Moly 5W-40. You will also find using a high-quality thicker oil will improve your oil consumption a bit more and offer that bit extra protection from oil dilution if an HPFP or injector fails.
Oh and oil changes no longer than 5,000 miles on these engines!
