my 1984 944 intermittantly fails to start. It has had a new disributor cap, leads, plugs ect. Can anybody tell me if this car has a DME relay or a fuel pump relay? If it would pack in altogether i might have a better chance of traceing the fault! I am sure i had read about somekind of common relay problem on these cars?

Your right about the DME relay causing problems after a while- get it replaced. Even at an OPC the cost will be around £20. Cheaper if you try one of the specialists that advertise in e.g. the Porsche Magazines.

I think you will find that the above relay controls the fuel pump hence why it causes starting problems / cut outs.

Could be the DME relay but it could be a duff ignition switch that is causing the problem. Does it occasionaly turn over but not fire (most likely its the relay) or if you turn the key and you get nothing at all, then its probabale that the ignition switch is the culprit.

Hope this helps.

Could also be a problem with the aftermarket alarm/immobiliser (if you have one fitted) - happened to me - started intermittent then got terminal.
