4 days in Berlin - what are the musts?

At the end of the month I'm off to Berlin with my brother for 4 days, I've got a couple of things in mind to see but 4 days is quite a long time so I think I need some more things to add to the itinerary.

Any suggestions for things we must visit or places we should eat?

So far my only suggestion is the Olympic Stadium and he's booked a visit to the Reichstag...

I wanted to see Tempelhof so I’ll have a look at the tours.

My brother is absolutely not a car guy so I think the other thing is off the menu unfortunately.

Visit the DDR Museum, it's a fascinating insight into post-war East Germany

I've got a long weekend in Berlin in a few months prior to a conference (so my Mrs will get an extra couple of days to explore while I have to work), so also interest in the suggestions here.

We had a day there several years ago, the Reichstag building was interesting, and we did a walking tour which was good and took us to checkpoint Charlie and several other landmarks. We didn't make it to museum island which is supposed to be good so on the agenda for next time.

The conference info package included a top 10 things to see

We did a bike tour with an excellent guide. It was very leisurely and we covered a lot more ground than walking with a number of stops to explore

And checkpoint charlie was pretty duff, however fitted nicely into our route

As ever depends on interests etc, but a few suggestions for (mostly free) sightseeing (likely some duplicates from other suggestions):

- Have a drink at the bar in the TV tower at Alexanderplatz early evening – book tickets in advance
- There’s also rooftop viewing (three euros) from the Humboldt Forum (nearby) & another bar there
- East Side Gallery
- Tiergarten Park & the Soviet War Memorial
- Soviet War Memorial @ Treptower Park
- Pints at one of the beer gardens i.e. Golgatha Biergarten (which is near Templehof)
- Kurfürstendamm
- U-Bahn & trams to get around on
- Burgermeister

There’s an air museum at former RAF Gatow which looks good, but I’ve never been out there.

It’s a fantastic city.

I had a Segway tour a few years ago, it was a pretty good way to get around and see some sights..

The Bebelplatz is a quiet memorial..

Murphy's Irish bar at check point Charlie had a Zoltar machine.

There also used to be a motorcycle GDR museum if you like that kind of thing, but I think it's now closed and part of the DDR already mentioned.

Book the Reichstag in the evening, so you go up the dome as it gets dark.

Drive some Trabants around and do the guided tour. I enjoyed that the most. Those cars were so bad they were fun sort of thing.

Parlament der baume is a small park with an art installation. It shows sections of the wall opposite each other with fortifications between. It’s really a stark view of what’s the “wall” was really like in places.

The tv tower is worth a visit but I wouldn’t eat there, menu is restrictive and overpriced.

Loads of really good ideas from everyone else too. Our hotel is near Alexanderplatz so I think we'll probably visit the TV tower to look at the view at least. DDR museum is added to the list too, that's the kind of thing I know we'll both enjoy.

Either to or from the Brandenburg Gate, take a walk down Unter den Linden. There are some impressive buildings to see and places to eat and drink all the way along.

Berlin Underground is well worth a visit.

And don't forget a glass of Berliner Waldmeister

I've been a couple of times and the atmosphere at Hackescher Markt is really good. A good food and drink spot. I stayed at the Raddison Blu hotel back when the giant aquarium was in the lobby.

We booked a ticket for the TV tower and had a nice cocktail with great views. For day time sights, Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin wall (or what's left of it) and the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe of worth seeing. We hired bikes and did a cycle around the city the first time. It was very hot at the time but a lovely way to see the city.
