Thinking I might like some overalls. Anyone bought any? I’m sort of thinking of construction type trousers / bib (? If that’s the right term - ie integrated front panel) with shoulder straps style. Like a German thing, rather than one full body overalls inc arms etc iykwim

For working on cars i'm still using the two full boiler suits i was issued some 25 years ago when working on car transporters, bib and brace type won't protect you when you're crawling about underneath.

Really heavy cotton, velcro front fastening instead of zip/buttons, no side pockets (slits to access your trouser pockets) and a velcro flapped top pocket, that company issued really good quality gear rather than the cheap tat so many companies issue now which fall apart.
Pockets arn't much use on overalls if you're working under cars unless they have velcro flaps, everything just slides out when on your back.
This weather i'm bk naked underneath, nothing untoward can be seen.

The last one I bought was from Screwfix - they have a good selection and there seems to be a shop on every high street now so convenient.

Bought some cheap ones and they didn’t last long at all. Replaced with JCB overalls and they seem much more sturdy and better quality, and weren’t too dear.

I buy Dickies and find they wear well. I have both bib/braces and trousers.

Regardless of brand, from my experience:

1) For either, get the kneepad inserts.
2) Bib and brace gives you less movement than trousers so is less suitable for jobs with difficult access.
3) Bib and brace keeps your lower back warmer than trousers so you are less likely to aggravate it in cold weather
4) If you get the trousers, get an elasticated belt for them - this gives you better movement.

Just been having a look around, fking hell who would have thought it was so difficult? Not many brands to choose, from; various reviews look like many of them are badly made / ill fitting; what the fk are ‘coveralls’? Is that an Americanism? It seems the old faithful ’overalls’ is a dirty word now.

There are no reviews on youtube (seems I’ve found a new niche if I want to start doing product reviews!) I decided to ignore bib style.

Toolstation do:
  • dickies ‘Redhawk Coverall’ £50 only 2 reviews but both like them
  • Portwest ‘ Boiler Suit’ £20 seems to be the most basic and traditional (stud opening, which is how mechanics overalls were always done in the past) but reviews say material bit thin and sizing all over the place (short body, ridiculously long legs)
  • Portwest ‘Zip Front Coverall’ £22 / some iffy sizing eg too long / short arms etc so seem a bit weird, + cheap zip
  • JCB ‘Trade Coverall’ £36 all reviews seem quite positive, so maybe good choice at reasonable price, bit cheaper than dickies?
Amazon: tried looking at portwest but amazon’s stty website now makes it impossible to search properly / see who’s selling it / very confusing mess of a website so fk them I abandoned

Screwfix:
  • dickies ‘Redhawk Coverall’ £50 same as toolstation, No reviews
  • dickies ‘everyday boiler suit / coverall’ £50 no reviews. Seem to be a general boiler suit.
  • Site ‘almer coveralls’ £27 seem to be general basic traditional type, good reviews and some return customers so sounds good.
  • Unbranded ‘General purpose coverall’ £15 has studs which I quite like. Good reviews but some mention low quality so I think they’re pretty cheap.
That’s pretty much all there is unless I look on specialty woodworking sites or whatever

I’ve decided to get some Site ‘almer coveralls’ £27 from screwfix, the customer reviews have won me over compared with the very variable dickies reviews. Who new it’d be so hard to make a pair of bloody overalls!

Every time I wear overalls, I have a minor panic attack trying to take them off.

So I wear an old t-shirt and a pair of Dickies trousers, with braces.

I look like a proper pillock.

It's nothing new, there's always been a variety of workwear gear depending on what trade you are and what work you are doing. And just as always, some choose to eschew workwear.

Remember, you aren't married to it so if you fancy a change or trying something different then don't be afraid to. thumbup

It will no doubt vary depending on size, but I haven't had any odd issues with Portwest medium stuff. Zips also seem very robust.

Stumbled across some genuine new Aston Martin overalls on Ebay, my size & they are excellent, with the ergonomic arms etc so they don't all bunch up. Far nicer than the normal sort I've used & was only something like £25 odd

Many years ago at the NEC Classic Car Show in November I found a place selling second hand garage branded overalls. Found some that fit, bought them. They are brilliant for grovelling about on the floor without ruining my clothes. Only downside is that they say "Nissan" on them...

The Site stuff at Screwfix is ok in my experience, never really liked Dickies personally but everyone is different.
Cant stand tighter fitting clothes being a bit on the larger side and that`s an issue these days.

I have a couple of these:

They are comfortable, for the reasons mentioned above, and wash well. My wife calls them my Andy Pandy trousers, but I’d recommend them.

Hughs Agri II. Best overalls I've had. Miles better than the Dickies I used to get from Mole Valley. These are the same they supply to tractor companies minus the logos.

Thank you, for this. Inspired by your post I have a set of Rolls Royce branded overalls on the way from a private seller on eBay. From the price they seem like a bargain, it almost feels like sacrilege to be planning on rolling around under an old Citroën in them.
