Melbourne, Great Ocean Road?
Discussion
We did it in late 2022, also on the way to NZ.
Drove straight out from Melbourne airport, and stayed two nights on the GOR, one in Apollo Bay (location of the southernmost pub in the world or something) and one in Warrnambool, then headed back to Melbourne for remaining day and a bit before we headed to NZ.
First day had the most to see and you spend more time closer to the coast than the second day. I imagined it being like the PCH in California, if you've done that, but the road isn't next to the ocean nearly as much.
The Twelve Apostles (bunch of old rocks!) are pretty stunning. Didn't see as much wildlife as we hoped - not many 'roos to be seen, and eventually spotted a Koala up a tree!
Enjoyed it, but make sure you leave enough time to see Melbourne, if you've not been before, it's a great city.

We did it a few years ago as part of an organised tour, from Melbourne outside the Contemporary Dance Theatre to Adelaide over 3 and half days. Went up in a helicopter over "London Bridge" and the Twelve Apostles although I'm not sure how much of that is still standing.
It pretty much comes to an end at Peterborough, we went onto Adelaide as our next trip was into the Dead Centre enroute to Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock and Alice Springs.
You should be able to do it in a car in a couple of days, The Apollo Bay Hotel was good fun but make sure they have a band on for the best night, but beware the various attractions won't be cheap. Have fun!

I'd echo this.....drove from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road a good few years ago now. The coast stretch from 12 Apostles to Apollo Bay is memorable, the rest not so much.Drove straight out from Melbourne airport, and stayed two nights on the GOR, one in Apollo Bay (location of the southernmost pub in the world or something) and one in Warrnambool, then headed back to Melbourne for remaining day and a bit before we headed to NZ.
