I moved into a house with an electric roller garage door and when it's opening the motor doesn't sound very happy and the door rises quite slowly, especially when it first starts and the motor is lifting most weight.

The manual says it's maintenance free and shouldn't be lubricated. However, I wiped the door down with some soapy water and opened it whilst it was still wet and it raised noticeably faster so there clearly is some friction issues.

Also on the inside of the doors you can see there's marks where there's metal on metal contact.

I was thinking of giving it a spray with a silicone or PTFE spray? Anyone else had any luck with some targeted lubrication (ooo err)?

When we had ours installed, the fitters told us to use Mr Sheen.

Not felt the need to yet, that was about 7 years ago.

We have a black Secureoglide door, been in about 14 years . It seems more noisy in summer when it swells up a bit. I have washed it a few times over the years and sprayed it a couple of times with ACF50 oil, both inside and out. Seemed to quieten in down but then a year or two later you can hear it again some days. I just think its the nature of metal on metal as it expands and rolls up on itself. The actual mechanism has been faultless and never lubed or maintained in any way.

According to The Internet, Mr Sheen contains silicone. That's good I have some silicone spray might give it a go. I guess the main thing is nothing too thick which will attract dust and grit.

PTFE spray is good stuff. My garage door moves much more easily after being sprayed with it.

Is that from it running over something like a bar or just the door rubbing on the door?

The gouges look like there must be dirt or grit or something, seems to be more than just rubbing. Maybe needs a clean.

If you have a surface that something runs across then adding some UHMW tape makes a good low friction wear surface.

If you're adding a lubricant use something dry like a PTFE spray otherwise it'll attract dirt and make things worse.

It's from where the door wraps around itself as it opens. Possibly it hadn't been cleaned regularly by previous owner.

I have found a massive can of PTFE spray for keeping bikes clean. That'll do nicely. :-)
