Sunday night prime time & BB2 has the 60’s version of Italian Job?

Since when has BBC2 had films?

Is this what the licence payers fund?

It’s the summer. I think the BBC assume everyone is away.
Even though the schools go back here this week.

I thought that post would be a heads up that there was a great film on.

One of the best ‘car-adjacent’ films ever, the Miura, the Minis, the E Type off the cliff.

I’d hope the majority on PH would see this being on BBC2 as a good thing!

A lot of the BBC staff worked really, really long hours covering Glastonbury and Wimbledon, so they are all on leave. Nobody to organise the schedules..

We would! Another opportunity to see a great film.

But some think otherwise:

So the thread is just another TV licence bashing exercise.

Nice to be able to watch a film all the way through without some telling me what to spend my money on every ten minutes.(nsfw) adverts

No wasn’t meant to be, just never thought of BBC showing old films, thought that the nature of their funding meant it was all usually fresh stuff on these main channels with repeats etc on “lesser” channels

Yeah, I'm not too sure what I should be getting angry about either.

The BBC regularly shows old films and has done for many years, the majority of which tend to be classics and very good. Currently I'm watching The Silence of the Lambs on BBC2 which is followed by The Commitments.

They are also available on the iPlayer, again without the interruption of adverts.

It would be interesting to see documentary about the Italian job; it’s certainly not short of material, intrigue and mystery, how much of which is true may be open to question.

It remains one of my favourite films, being a simple soul, cars, birds and inappropriate humour; I’m in my happy place. It’s quintessentially British and all the better for it.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve (subjected others) seen it. No excuses are necessary for another viewing.

There are old films on BBC every week, sometimes several a day. Casablanca was also on yesterday.

Old documentaries and drama series often get an airing too.

What are you talking about, BBC 2 have been showing "old" films since I was a kid in the 70s!

Ok - my mistake

Probably just my misconceptions, my internet was down last night & I went looking for alternatives, don’t really watch much TV normally.

I genuinely thought BBC1 & 2 were different to the commercial channels in content (adverts aside) & in all honesty looking at what’s listed as BBC2’s remit & how I interpret it, I still think a repeat of a 60’s film is wide of the mark a bit, regardless of how good it is/was.

BBC2 Used to show decent foreign films like Luis Buñuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie when I was a kid in the '70s.

Also Alex Cox's Moviedrome series of weird and wonderful films.

The good old days. smile

If you're thinking of the cultural/arts/scientific content, then that's largely moved to BBC4. A lot of that has been canned with budget cuts sadly.
