Have gum issues, had them for years and had a few treatments to help, sadly it is one of those issues that never gets better for me no matter what is done.

Recently moved to a new dentist due to a house move and the usual trial of explaining everything, 3 monthly hygiene visits etc.

They have a specialist there (shows how much money they make) saw her yesterday, got home email containing the quote

8 grand

My mate had IVF with his missus that costs 11.

I get it is specialist work but cmon, that's almost a third of my wage

Are there any other options people in similar situations might have seen or heard of

Get your vet to do it, my rescue dog has just had to have 12 teeth extracted for £500 thanks to neglect by her previous "owner" which now seems like a bargain.

My wife is a qualified dentist but now works as an oral surgeon at an NHS clinic.

When younger she worked in private practice and there was very much a focus on extracting cool as much money as possible from the paying punter; largely to cover the lower prices paid by the NHS.

No wonder people look further and go abroad

Your wife is not wrong. There are some private dentists (well one in particular) that come on here who attempt to justify their high prices and basically rubbish any other country that can do it cheaper rolleyes

I was at the hygenist the other day at a Bupa outfit that also see people under the NHS. In the waiting room, one patient comes out and pays £27 another patient goes in and sees the same dentist and pays £95 for the same check-up. That just doesn't sit right with me, the surgery should either be NHS or private.

If they had to make a choice, you wouldn't be getting NHS dentistry anywhere.

I know of a few people who have gone to Turkey for 'necessary' dental work. They've been happy with the work.

NHS dentistry is subsidised by the government and private isn't. Not difficult to understand.

I don't think people are finding it hard to understand

I don't get the issue, you haven't got to get the work done and you don't have to get it done with them. Either enough people are willing to pay that price there which is why they quoted that or they don't want to do that work which is why they priced it so high.

When it's private just treat them like any other trade, they're just builders but in your mouth

To bring it back to the builders comment... are they building a large extension or painting a door frame?

£8k could be cheap or expensive.

If you tell us what you need or what it is you want doing then we can advise on the value. If you say what part of the country you are in, I can also recommend a better option. I know most of the best dentists in the UK.

I go against the general consensus of the dental world when it comes to foreign treatment in that I'm not totally against it. I have seen some truly horrendous work done abroad which people have struggled to have rectified here and it's cost them a fortune to have it fixed but at the same time I've seen some decent results.

If you get unlucky then it could be a problem for the rest of your life.

It is building two lower molars back up with bone to enable the pockets and gum line to improve, also beyond gum line cleaning needing injections 1700 per tooth, I am afraid I deleted the message

I had some work done years at Guys by students that helped a bit just lower gum line cleaning
