What's the single best piece of advice that you've ever been given?

And no, don't eat yellow snow doesn't count.

I had three (sorry):

"If you lie on the ground people will tread on you" - my Dad

"Being nice to people is a lot less effort than being unpleasant" - my Mum

"If you don't like yourself, it's unlikely anyone else will" - can't remember who - but it's very true.

Not advice as such, but a quote I have picked up at some point (Henry Ford I think?)...

"If you think you can, or you think you can't, then you're probably right."

Aways seems spot on.

Similar to the above but one good bit of advice I always thought was:-

"If you think you're taking the piss, you probably are."

Excellent for everyday situations from filling out those expenses claims to looking down the menu when you know you're not paying the bill to the number of personal calls made at work.

My Grandmother was told given this little nugget when being taught to drive.

"If you think you can easily fit your head and shoulders through a gap, you can probably get your car through it"

Because the car becomes an extention of yourself, that advice apparently works very well!

All from my dad:

Always go to the toilet on works time

Take your socks off before your trousers when in the company of a lady

Don't be affraid of the dead, it's the live buggers you have to watch out for
