Seriously does anyone have any links as to why people do this. I realy would like to know.

I have to walk down an allyway to the train station and the fences have been covered in graffiti. Last week the council started painting all the fences dark brown, section by section by the end of the week 2/3 of the fence was painted. Walked past yesterday to see freshly painted panels have fresh graffiti on them. Today its been painted out for the second time.

graffiti morons 2 - council 2

Any ideas why they do it

It makes them 'famous' amongst their peers.

I did one piece of grafitti when i was a teenager. A freind and I decided to become a gang but we needed a cool name. We lived in West Harrow so we became 'The West Sector Patrol'

Now we had a gang and a name all that was left to do was mark our territory, we got a small tin of beige paint and a brush from one of our parents cupboards and made our way up to the end of our road where there was a large wall that was already 'tagged'.

We ran out of paint half way through and for years you could still see WEST SECTOR PA proudly displayed up there

I wouldn't mind, but when they go mainstream, and display their work, (the decent artists, not those that just write a tag, or stupid phrases), their work is actually really good, and they have a lot of talent... maybe those that do the 'artwork' graffiti just don't have a real outlet?

"Because it is art mate!"

Well if that is the case can I come and do some of my 'art' on the walls of your house, or on your car?

No? But it's art mate.

I agree with the art thing. One mans art is another mans garfitti. But proper skillled artword does not belong on the side of trains or houses. This tagging isnt art its destruction of property

I'd say it's a territorial, scent-marking kind of thing.

Kids don't have an outlet, at school if they showed they were a good artist they would get bullied for being a swot, so by doing it in an illegal way they can show their rebellious side and also show off their skill.

These guys need to let of steam - you maybe do it by driving, or reading, or exercising, these guys do it by painting. Their images show that they think and what they are going through.

I'm not condoning taggers, but when its done properly I like it. it livens up boring places. I actually stumbled across a load the other day on a public footpath under a motorway bridge, and I was struck with how stunning it looked.

So screw you lot that think its a load of crap, its their way of expressing themselves and showing how they feel.

All IMO of course

I wasn't condoning graffitti on walls, or trains, but when they go mainstream, and have their work displayed, it is a remarkable talent...

That wasn't my point. surely you wanted to be 'rebellious' when you were a kid? Its a way of showing their emotions to other people. Have you ever made a thread on here when you were pissed off/angry/upset and felt you just had to tell someone?

Thats what these kids are doing, but their art says something to them and maybe it means different things to different people. Just look at all the art in Ireland to do with the IRA?. It all tells a story.

Like I said, taggers I can't condone, but if I saw someone doing grafitti and it looked good, I think I'd be compelled to watch how they do it. some take days to do, and it takes a hell of a lot of skill.

Now I must be off, gotta design my new tag and get some more spray paint

So every time you got angry, annoyed, pissed, upset, frustrated, you just botteled it up inside you and never released it? You never got into a fight at school, never doodles on your school books, never sang to yourself in the shower or made up songs?

Everyone expresses themselves in different ways, live and let live.

Well that's OK then. Don't make excuses for them; I managed to get through school without splattering paint on walls.

Its the taggers that I was having dig at. But even so getting on a train and not being able to see out of the window because some artist has decided this train would look good with his artwork on the outside is not in the public interest.

I repect the skill it takes to create this sort of thing but other atists dont resort to painting trains to be seen

Imagine you're at a state school, you live on a council estate, you have nothing to do at night, your parents have just divorced or are going through it, arguing and shouting at each other all the time.

You need to get out, so you grab your bag and go to a local park. You find a clean wall and grab some spray paint. For the next 2 hours you are immersed in producing a picture that shows what you're going through, you can't think of anything else because you don't want to make any mistakes. When you finish it, you can stand back and see you have achieved something.

You don't think about getting shouted at by teachers at school for not doing well, this is something you have done on your own, and f**K you can do it well.

Now every time you walk past that wall later, you can maybe add to the image, or it just reminds you of past times, worse times. Its a moment of your life, and its something that you can achieve.

TBH, if I was any good at art I reckon I'd tag/grafitti somewhere. Its a sense of achievement that most kids dont get anywhere else.
