Good afternoon . I'm weighing up new tyres for my car and the Kuhmos ecstasy get really good reviews . Id be looking at the PS71 or the 72 - I believe the 72 is just the new version. Has anyone used these tyres and have any opinions on if they are good ?

Car they would be going in is a Porsche 997.1 911

I’ve had PS71 and PS91 before and found them alright. They do wear quite quickly though. I believe the new PS72 are good, but there’s two versions. Get the Sport S one if you can. They do only start at 18” upwards, if that’s ok for you.

I have them on my A6 Allroad, also my old Rover R8 coupe.
For me, they’re about as good as you’ll get for the price.

I got my Dad a couple for his Mokka as the ditch finders that were fitted were very noisy and he is happy with them.

I have them on three cars.
I think they are excellent. My only caution being in the wider sizes I think they have only 6mm tread new, and on the rear, I actually noticed today, are wearing fast.
On normal sizes they have more tread to start.
They are a great tyre.

Get hot quickly and turn to bubblegum. Toyo Proxes TR-1 far better at similar price point.
Why are you not putting leading brand tyres on a 911 though?

I replaced Michelin PS3s on my ST with PS71s. When pushing on, they don't have the initial bite on turn in but overall they drive well. However, not sure I'd want them on something with double the power.

I've got kumhos ps71s on the front of my bmw and boxster, and for the money, I rate them highly. Would happily have again.

As an aside, why can no-one spell Kumho? It's not khumo or kuhmo, it's kumho. Kum - ho. KUMHO.

I had them on my old Kia but the front tyres were eaten after 18k miles. I replaced them with Goodyear Eagle F1s that had more grip and lasted longer. I think not putting the best tyres you can afford on a 911 is denying yourself the best possible experience.

I can't understand why people get obsessed with "premium" tyres for a car only used on the road.

When I bought my BMW Z4M it had after-market 19" wheels with MPSS tyres. On a cold, drizzly December day they were absolutely hopeless! banghead

OK in the summer they were much better, but I went back to OE 18" wheels and got a set of Kumho Ecsta PS71s fitted that worked all year round.

I got 15K out of the rears and would have bought the same to replace them, but had left it a bit late for a trip to Scotland so went with Hankook Ventus and they have been fine too.

Just because you had wholly unsuitable premium brand tyres on your car doesn't mean all premium branded tyres are a waste of money!

They are basically a summer only UHP, in fact virtually "track-focused" tyres, and totally unsuitable for wet/winter use.

Kumho ECSTAs are an half-decent mid-range tyre, if you would call your car a mid-range car then you will be OK with them.

You have bought a high-end high performance car, fit high-end high performance tyres, would be my best advice, and if you can't afford the consumables for the car, then it isn't the right car for you.

Just sayin'. wink

I always get ‘cold optimised’ premium tyres for a boggo daily. The marketing blurb usually mentions something. Continental calls it ‘Red Chili’ compound, to help with damp autumn conditions and lower temperatures.

Just because a tyre is ‘premium’ doesn’t mean it’s been optimised for the cold.

Running them on my 124 spider, can’t say I have any complaints. They’re wearing well, plenty of grip dry and wet.

But it seems there is more to it than that, depending on how and when you plan to use your car.

Some of the premium offerings might be fantastic on sunny summer days, but I like to use my car all year round. I'll be making my 6th trip to Scotland next weekend and they have all been out of season to avoid crowds and camper-vans, and my Ecstas worked just fine for trips like that.

Revered expensive offerings like MPSS would have been cr*p on damp/cold roads. Not everyone only does track days in the summer!

Which is EXACTLY why I said what I said, they are NOT the tyres for 99% of the cars usage by 99% of the population.

Buy the right tyre for what you use the car for.

Jon on T/R says exactly that on pretty much all of his reviews.

Im using a set of PS72 on my Z3 with 18" aftermarket wheels.

Ideally wanted to go for a set of PS5 but was on a budget at the time.

Only driven around 1000 miles on them so far, a few of them in anger, none in the wet - they seem alright so far.
