On one hand people are saying 17k+ is too much for a late '96. On the other hand they're saying they would never buy a 13k cerb as they would think it suspicious.
Then there's the people saying that you should only buy a '98 onwards as anything older will be an unreliable piece of junk :rolleyes:
What do you have to do to sell a car? It's been on PH, it's been on SoR at a dealer (which was a waste of time as you wouldn't know it was for sale unless you went into the dealers). It's back on PH, priced at 16k and expecting to be haggled down. In all that time I've had 1 enquiry and 1 offer of P/X. Is it really getting to the point where you almost can't give them away!!! It's not a love/hate colour, it's not unreliable, the ad has been viewed over 250 times in 5 days. It's not just mine though, cerb turnover in the classifieds seems very slow.
Ah well, it looks like a dealer will get a bargain.

The reason your struggling to sell it, is that there are cheaper, lower mileage cars for sale, starting from £12.5K.
The cheap one's would need to be checked to see if there HPI clear, but if they are, yours appears at a higher price.
Low mileage 96 models are around the £14k mark.
The comment about people thinking "£13k is to cheap, there must be something wrong with it" IMO is wrong.
Put it in at £9k "HPI clear etc" and you'll be inundated with calls, proving one thing.
I'm not suggesting, you do, but current market forces & all that, for what it's worth, I'm as gutted about the low value of my car as you are, but hey ho.

Have you tried ebay? You might not get what you want but you will get more than a dealer will offer.

I think one of the main issues for the depreciation of Cerberas is sometime the stupidity of this forum. If someone comes on and says 'I am thinking of buying this car, do you think its a good price?' There will be tons of reponses saying, 'ooh thats too much have you seen this?' Or have you thought about the 5K a year running costs etc. This forum is probably the one everyone uses when buying a cerbera, and I think sometimes is responsible for keeping second hand private values lower than they should be, after all this is a beautiful potential classic, but unlike most classics, actually goes like stink too.
Next time a factory special comes on here, maybe we should be more happy for the owner to get the money they are after, rather than saying 'thats way too much', 'why is it worth more than this one etc' Surely its in our interest to keep prices stable?

In that case, "they're ultra reliable, all the dealers have bundles of stock if by some miracle you need to buy a new part, you can get them fixed for as little as £5 per hour, & If you see one at less than fifty grand, it's a nail"
Is that better ?
edited to add, my car was £32650 new in 96, how many nine year old cars that cost that much new, still fetch over £10 grand ?

I'm not saying take the p1ss and lie, just saying that not all of them are dogs. I have just spent money on mine, (like just spending £250 on new brake disks because they made a noise, not because they were worn...............) But you would hope that the amount of money you have to plough into them, means that at least the residuals stay up a bit? Compared to other high performance cars they do hold their value fairly well, just seen an Ad for an AMG merc go from 85K to 40K in 2 years!! Just as we have to put so much investment into keeping the buggers going, you would hope that you wouldn't have to suffer such harsh depreciation either? I mean, its not a focus? And Griffiths seem to hold their money.

I think you have hit the nail on the head so to speak. IMO there are a few people who constantly knock the prices of the cars even though they own one themselves. It's only going to hurt them in the long run unless they plan on keeping it forever. I've tried to stay away from pricing cars for people asking that question as I know I am only going to affect my own investment which is not a small amount by any means.
I've resigned myself to taking a hit on it as my mind was made up months ago that it would be sold but the more cars that are sold for bargain basement prices the less cars will inevitably be available as they fall into neglect.

Sorry to hear you haven't sold the cerb yet, looking at all the ads on PH, I've noticed all the cars I looked at myself over a month ago now, mainly 96/97 4.2's are still available with reduced prices etc, so your not on your own.
As you know, after looking at your car & Joe's not to mention 3 or 4 others, I opted to take a gamble on a £12,500 cerb with little known history & from a non enthusiast owner. Dodgy I know, but if there's one piece of advice I took from this forum it's "allways have a spare 2-3K in your pocket for when it goes wrong" this applies wether your spending 12K or 17K,( the only exception is buying from a dealer with warranty, but they're still wanting £19,995, whats that all about! ) so spending 12.5K I reckoned I'd have a spare 4 or 5K in my pocket.
Fortunately the car's proved to be okay, I've had it in for a major service, and we've found nothing major wrong,( thank god!) except both manifolds are cracked so I'm currently having a pair handmade in stainless, basically for my 12.5K plus 1-1.5K in bills I've got myself one hell of a cerb, but I reckon I was lucky!
Anyone looking at Andy's car will struggle to find anything wrong with it, & you'll be buying a good genuine cerb from a bloke who knows the car inside out, plus it's one very loud car!

Cheers Pete, TBH though I don't blame you for going for the one you bought. I'd probably do the same myself if I was in your shoes. Offer still stands to give you a hand with any bits and bobs if needed. See you at Sundays meet if you're out and about.
Thinking about reducing one final time
