Hi all,

Wanted to get thoughts on if, following various threads/news on Macans being stolen and general theft of Porsche headlights, it wouldn’t be a very sensible move to buy a Macan GTS from a security perspective?

Of course, nobody can say for certain what the future holds but after reading through some threads on here, I am beginning to have some concerns. We are currently due to put a deposit down this week on a 2020 Macan GTS.

Car would be parked in an unlocked/not gated (I know) communal garage in South London under our building.

In the five years of living here, the garage has occasionally attracted unwanted attention… neighbour’s C63 was scoped out but nothing happened, bicycles were stolen, attempted theft of a motorbike, somebody trying door handles etc… so not without its issues. On the other hand and for additional context, a different neighbour had a 718 GTS for years parked in the non-garage area of the building/in the open and never had issues.

I love everything about the car except the potential security concerns. I tend to overthink anything and everything and so would appreciate views on this.

Would a ghost immobiliser help and if so would it void the warranty?

Many thanks

You're over-thinking it. If someone really wants to steal a Macan and yours is the one they choose there's not much you can do, that's why you have insurance.

Just buy the car and enjoy it, it would seem crazy to not buy a car you like for fear of it getting nicked?

Maybe put a good steering lock on it, maybe even a wheel lock?

Pretty much the only thing worth bothering with is physical deterrent. Steering wheel locks etc. Potentially a collapsible security post if you're allowed to fit one in the garage. The idea, as ever, is to make stealing your car/bike/whatever more grief than the identical one 2 miles away. A Macan GTS is not a super rare car after all.

Ghosts don't invalidate warranties persay, but they do make it easier for dealers/manufacturers to say whatever electrical fault you have is not covered. Stuff like wheel bearings would still be covered as no impact from having a ghost fitted.

I would also add that its all very well considering where you live, but presumably this will be your daily, so will spend time in places other than under your building. So again physical deterrent is better as it takes more time to bypass than code grabbing.

Having a car stolen is a massive ball ache, regardless of having insurance.

OP, we're in exactly the same position, really fancy a Macan, but live in W London and the car would be on our driveway (no garage). We've so far decided against it. The constant worry would impact on our enjoyment of the car, whereas our current car, a diesel Merc GLC, does everything we actually need and doesn't come with the same concerns.

I guess one day we'll probably bite the bullet but for now there's not much fun to be had in owning a car you love but not being able to relax about it.

An immobiliser won't prevent scrotes stealing headlights anyway. Theft of car? st happens. You get paid a settlement, you buy something else that tickles your fancy. At least you've scratched one (Porsche) itch!

Bought a Velar a couple of years ago, parked on the street in SW London. Was really paranoid but it's been completely trouble free - put a £50 steering lock off Amazon on and added a Pandora immobiliser.

I actually removed the Pandora as it was a complete pain in the arse - alarm randomly going off, not identifying the tag when walking up to the car, stupid extra loud beeping sound when locking/unlocking car, tracker failing every couple of months... Junk.

There are a LOT of expensive cars parked on the street around London. You may get unlucky, you may not.

My recos are to get the steering wheel lock, Faraday pouch and cheap tracker off Amazon. Bollard in front of parking space if possible.

Thanks for thoughts/opinions, all. A wheel lock sounds as if it would offer some peace of mind (wouldn't help with lights but better than nothing). Would likely err on the side of caution with respect to invalidating any warranty with a ghost immobiliser having done some further research -- even if that argument would apply only to electronics, I'd rather avoid it if I can.

Insurance is there for a reason but as hinted at by another poster, I would be keen to avoid the inconvenience of even having to go through the process of claiming, if it can be helped.

Stealing Macans is a thing? Christ, I can’t wait to get shot of mine! I pretty much regret buying the the thing every single day. Who on earth wants to nick Macans?? Or is this just a London thing?

I’d say you want to worry far more about the bloody things eating tyres! Im approaching dbl figures in rubber I’ve had to replace on it in 3yrs. Dont even look at a pothole!

Loads of macans getting stolen at the moment. Little bit more complicated to take them then the other cars. Disclock + ghost immobiliser + metatrack deadlock covers you from most scenarios and gives you good peace of mind.

Loads being stolen where I live (nice suburb of NW London)
I think main reason being they can be broken for parts, and Porsche parts are worth £££

Same applies to Cayenne and any JLR SUVs

You see, I’d say the exact opposite. As someone who’s had the scum making life utter misery, and turning up at my house with machetes and baseball bats, I’d say ‘fk that’. Sure the car itself is insured, but there’s no compensation for the stress caused by the oxygen thieving detritus.

And that’s before even mentioning why you’d put yourself through that for a Macan!

A good mate of mate lived in SW London until last year. Had his Cayenne lights nicked a few years back. He moved the car on after that. Then his new to him X5 got nicked early Spring last year. He now has another Cayenne but happily he now lives in Hampshire with a large driveway and a double garage. Far fewer feral scrotes to be worried about.
