I've been receiving calls which my phone identifies as suspected spam. I duly mark them so and block. However, they try again from a different number.

This week I've had around a dozen calls from the same company which is from an Aylesbury (01296) dialling code. Each time I block the number. I didn't know I had a 'screen' option so I tried it and it looked like my Ai had a chat with theirs: someone called Ecoguard. Again, I blocked marking it as spam. An hour later, another call from the same area code but different number. When I've answered and it's the usual [delay] Hi it's Ben/Jack/Whoever from Ecoguard...

Now I'm declining/blocking but they still carry on. If I let it ring out 'it' leaves a VM.

I find that keeping them on the line for as long as you can stops them calling after a few times. Especially if you can get the conversation to turn slightly sexual.

ETA AIUI blocking the numbers is ineffective as they are spoofing the numbers.

I have had this from believe it or not a recruitment agency.

Have now blocked at least 6 separate numbers, some similar, some mobiles, all dead jobs no movement they leave blank answerphone messages, have contacted the UK office and asked to be removed from records, but the call centre is in India.

Sometimes they will ring the same number 5 or 6 times, ridiculous

This comes from Indeed job site. By using their site and creating a profile you agree for all your data and contact numbers, addresses to be sold to a spam company called Rocket who then sell it on to their thousands of "trusted third parties". If you've ever applied for a job on there with your real number if your job application, profile or CV, that's where all the spam calls have started from. Of course, everyone puts in their real contact number, because they want to be called for an interview and eventually offered the job.

register the number with the telephone preference service, it does help.

Be careful with TPS. Plenty of people have reported a big increase in spam calls and texts after registering with them and there is a lot of speculation that it's a trap to get info that a particular number is live and active. The TPS is run by a company called DMA (Direct Marketing Association) so they are obviously in the business of spamming people with unwanted crap and what better way to do it than with a nice big list of active phone numbers !

Utter rubbish, the DMA is there to ensure that direct marketing is done within the law, they operate between the direct marketers and government to help create legislation that stops direct marketers from spamming you while giving them enough room to still do what they do. They are largely responsible for the creation of the current direct marketing consent laws in he UK which have stopped you mailbox from being full of all the rubbish that you used to get.

@the poster above, you register the target number (ie yours) with the TPS. This puts it on a list that removes it from legitimate operators call pool, it can take a little while to take effect but it does work.

then if you get a spam call you tell the caller (as long as they are human and not AI) that the number they are calling is registered with the TPS and they are breaking the law. They will take you off their list pretty quickly after that.

01296? We 've had quite a few with that prefix along with others all pushing the same 'domestic cover renewal' scam. My mother is in her seventies and my late stepfather was in his eighties, so they were obviously on a list (I live with my mother). It gives me immense satisfaction when they call as it's a free form of stress relief. I let the scammers go through their spiel before telling male scammers that they should ask their mother for my details and then explain in graphic detail how I was hanging out the back of their mother the night before. The female scammers get the treatment of me starting to breath heavily before asking what colour underwear they're wearing. These people are pure scum preying on the elderly and vulnerable, so if I can make them uncomfortable and upset, so be it. The anger and racist abuse that follows let's me know I've done my job and hopefully push them towards getting out of the scamming game. When I was plod I dealt with an old boy who lost everything to these people and it was one of the most upsetting things I've ever had to deal with.
Given their use of autodiallers and our lack of an interception system, it's hard to prevent the calls. Amusingly, another regular scam call we receive is from some Pakistanis asking if we receive nuisance phone calls and would be interested in paying for a blocking service.
To my mind, scam calls are rather like walking past a beggar; it's an unpleasant part of modern life that can't really be avoided.

The Pakistani and Indian scam call centres take absolutely no notice of British law and will actively laugh at you telling them to take you off their list. UK cold calling may play ball, but overseas spammers have zero incentive to stop harassing people.

Maybe not but i have had many laughs telling them my name is Ben Chaud. The last 'HRMC' person wanted confirmation that was my name then called me a m****r funner after a thoughtful pause. smile

We get loads on our landline, wife gets a fair number including job texts, on her mobile, and I get the odd one on my mobile.

We've never registered with any job sites.

The numbers that call us all look like mobile number.

Not only is the number different each time, so is the company name.

Just answered a call (the fourth today) and the recorded message is to call them back. I think this is where the scam starts.

True enough but being on TPS can stop you getting on the lists that end up at the indian scam centres. it is far from a silver bullet solution but it is simple, easy and free step that you can take to reduce the issue.

I am fairly sure that's the company that calls you if you have won over 1 m on the lottery.

Just block all calls except those in your contacts list and those that call more than once within 10 minutes. (You can change the time frame for the block)
