Our dogs have had their first (and only) litter of puppies - accidental but lesson learnt.

We are trying to register them with the Kennel Club but are being blocked from doing so as the father's record has been endorsed 'Progeny not eligible for registration'.

When we bought the father in 2019, there was no mention of this or that we couldn't breed from him.

The breeder can remove this endorsement but they are saying that as the selling price for puppies has risen since 2019, they require us to pay £500 (total not per pup) and they will lift this restriction.

Is this usual behaviour from breeders or are they simply trying to 'graft' us out of some money?

Our westie is eligible for kc registration but wasn't as there was a breeder fee on top. Quite common I believe.

In some ways you are lucky the the breeder has no morals, the normal situation is that you need to undertake health tests with your dog( eg hips/elbows/eye test) and get suitable results before an endorsement will be lifted. This would cost way more than 500.00 and there is no guarantee that your dog will be of suitable breeding quality.

The fact that your dog is endorsed 'Progeny Not Eligible For Registration' should have been made clear in the contract when you purchased your dog.

You can 'appeal' to the Kennel Club to ask for the endorsement to be lifted, in which case it will be up to the breeder to 'prove' that they made you aware of the endorsement at the time of purchase. These days you have to sign a specific document that highlights the Endorsement. If the breeder can't prove you were aware then the endoresment will be lifted.

However getting anything doe with the KC is hard work, so it may be easier to just pay to 500.00!

We endorsed the pups and ensured that they would only be registered in the event that the parents had the relevant health tests and were cleared. If hte breeder hasn't asked about that I would be disappointed...

Thank you for the replies, very helpful as I was completely unaware of all of the 'admin' around this and it's now beginning to make sense.
