Thinking of chopping in my LCI G21 M340i and going for a X3 M40i (LCI 2021 onwards) partly as the wife (who occasionally uses the car) wants something with a higher driving position but also would like a bigger volume boot (I believe the X3 is bigger from reading online?). Planning to test drive one first in a couple of weeks when I'm not working but wanted to know if anyone has one and can give me feedback on how they drive and any negatives about the model perhaps ?

One thing I would like help clarifying is why some of the ones I've seen online have blue calipers and others have the red ones...I think the latter is because they have the pro pack option but are the brakes different other than the caliper colour?

I believe that you can choose to have them painted in either blue or red, and they're the same size I think. I deliberately wanted the red calipers on the G05 X5 40d for example, because I already had the blue calipers on the F82 M4.

That’s right, I think the blue calipers were standard and red was optional.

My G01 X3 M40i (pre-LCI) was a fantastic car, I can’t actually think of faults. I only changed to an X3M as found my perfect spec & got a decent trade-in deal, but I think the M40i is really all the car you’d need for most of the time.
I personally prefer the look of the pre-LCI, the distinct rather than fused kidney ‘nostrils’, & I was not so keen on ‘halo sword’ rear lights on the LCI, but the LCI interior is tidier & has a bigger central screen. LCI brought 48v mild hybrid to the M40i, which increased the hp but not sure how much real world difference that made. I think the main thing is to get the spec you want, for me the pan roof, HK speakers & parking assistant plus were the musts. Also be wary of de-contenting as a result of the post covid chip shortages which seemed to impact X3’s from end of 2021 through to 2022/23. But if you buy from a main dealer any deletes are usually clear in the options listing, removal of the touch function for the idrive controller seemed to be a common one.

Good to know, thanks. My M340i came with red calipers and think there's no choice.

Most of the pre-LCIs seem relatively high mileage hence why I'm going for the LCI (plus the bigger screen). Only annoyance with the LCIs on Autotrader is that a lot seem to be missing features like touch function for the iDrive (not a dealbreaker), wireless charging (guessing not that great if similar to my M340i experience) and lumbar support deletion due to the chip shortages at the time.

I have an LCI and it’s fantastic. It does everything you would need in a car. Spacious cabin, great driving position, big boot, plenty of power etc.

As you say, early LCI’s had a few post covid chip shortage issues so touch screens, touch idrive (I have it and never used it, it’s rubbish) phone charge pad (don’t have but apparently it makes the phone very hot and is a slow charge, I have an aftermarket pad which works great), lumber were deleted.

LCI’s red or blue calipers were a no cost choice.

Runflat Bridgestones were standard on the 21” wheels. They are a hard noisy ride. Better to swap for non RFT’s but you’ll need to source a spare which can be made to fit under the standard floor.

There are plenty of well spec’d cars for sale on the UK G01 Facebook page.

One option I would highly recommend if you can find one specced with is the M sport seats. Had them in my 40d lci and they were the best seats that I have ever had in a car.
