Gents,

After a bit of a sense check - new to me 2011 Mercedes c220 S204. Got a creak/clonk under braking, and an occasional knocking. It seems to be coming from the front right, certainly front end. It drives fine and handles ok- certainly not like something is about to fall off! I’ve replaced the front lower control arms as a ball joint was picked up on its recent mot, but the clonk remains.

Whilst under there I gave everything a waggle and everything seems tight. Droplinks are fairly shot but wouldn’t normally creak like this (although I will be replacing), arb bushes look tired, but I’m wondering if I just bite the bullet (although nothing is stupid expensive to do under there) and replace droplinks and go from there, although I’m wondering if it could be top mounts? Although having said that there’s no grinding or stiffness when steering…

Should add the problem is worse when ambient temperature is higher

Does it have a chassis brace? possibly upper and lower next to the strut towers...bolts can work loose on these.

If not then it's just a methodical and cheap work through, I think I'd start with the ARB bushes, if still present then the droplinks, then the suspension arms.

It is of an age where any/all of the above will be needing replacement.

Cheers,

Chris

Sounds like ARB bushes to me, cheap too so as above that's where I'd start!
