Where to stay near London

Hi all

Planning on visiting London for a couple of trips:
December 20-23
December 31-Jan 3

Me, the wife, and our three year old.

We’ll want to be doing shows/touristy stuff/seeing friends in the city, but want a nice hotel (4-5 star) without paying bonkers money, so happy to stay outside and travel for half hour or so on the tube to get in. Any recommendations of hotels that won’t break the bank that are within a 5 or so minute walk of a tube station? Or, anywhere I haven’t seen that is central and not loads of money. Won’t have a car with us, so no need for parking.

I'd just stay in the centre. To get any significant savings you'll be miles out or in a slum. Or both. A while since I've been but a quick look on Google gives plenty of choice for £100-150 a night.

I’d look just outside the centre, places like Greenwich, Canary Wharf or even Stratford. You usually get better value for money, hotels are newer, and the Tube/Overground gets you into central London pretty quickly. I stayed in Stratford last year with family and it was easy to hop on the Central line.

Pretty much this. Somewhere like the Hilton Doubletree Docklands Riverside would probably work.

Have a look at the Bailey's opposite Gloucester Road Tube. Great location, £200 ish a night BUT they do offers. I've stayed there for £100 a night

I was going to suggest that. It's still not cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than a similar standard hotel bang in the centre of town.

Apart from slightly out of town as mentioned above, maybe take a look at hotels around the business areas which maybe be quieter at the weekend e.g. Tower Hill. St Katherine Dock, Canary Wharf, Shoreditch/Hoxton

Just to add and echo some other comments. If theres something you are going to London to do/see, look at the tube line which makes it easiest to get to where you want, then look for somewhere to stay which is on that line.

The Premier Inn in Brentwood (former HQ of Amstrad!) is just over the road from the station from which it takes about 30 minutes to get to Tottenham Court Road.

I see you're based in the South West so there's doubtless similar to the west of London.

Hilton Riverside in the process of becoming a hostel.

With a 3 year old, suggest minimal hassle and be in the action. Have used Holiday Inn Regents Park several times with no issues. Does what it says on the tin.

I would suggest you check out the Premier Inn at Blackfriars, its very central, close to the station, large and pretty modern rooms and an OK bar - its better than most 3 star hotels that I know of and I always stay there when I visit London. You should be able to get a room for an average of just over £100 a night.

Westminster bridge premier inn is a great location for the west end. They have two as well.

Another vote for a Premier Inn, their rates are very good.
London Bank Tower. 3 nights Dec21st to 24th with b/fast (kids get it free) £367.

I had a look at the Thistle Tower Hotel just down the road. Same dates B&B £632.

Say no more.

( Like most hotels, it’s more expensive staying Fridays and Saturdays )

Somewhere near Earls Court? When our kids were smaller we would usually do a few days in London before they back to school, stayed in a Premiere Inn, kids under 16 get breakfast for free and you know the rooms and beds will be ok, you are spending all day in them.

We stayed in Richmond last year, 20/30 mins to get into London....that or any District Line Premier inn in SW London will be a good option.

Didn't even realise parking on the Sunday was free on the road until 10am next morning.

We had a trip to Legoland on the day after so was perfect to get up the M4.

I'm from London but moved to the southwest coast and love a day trip at Christmas, it's busy but lots going on. One novelty is changing of the guard might be on for your dates.

Very true, and I would take a winter of discontent into consideration, the tube strikes start this week, messing up Xmas is probably on the agenda.
