Not sure if this is correct forum section so please move if not!

Anyone else seen the news rules that have come in place for taking a trailer (Or caravan I believe) over 750kgs into most of Europe, less Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain? They now need to be registered with its own registration number!

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/trailer-registration

Not seen or heard this discussed before receiving a work e-mail update on Brexit from .gov.

Feel like this is going to cause mayhem for the first few weeks with people travelling unknown. Wonder what the repercussions are if stopped? Just a fine or will they impound it?

Here in France it has been a requirement for as long as I can remember. I have a utility trailer which will take 800 kg but it's plated at 500 kg so it's not registered. Caravans also have a separate registration.
They also have their own insurance
Brexit just keeps on giving !

This came in around 2017/2018 IIRC.......... did you by any chance see a Daily Mail / Mirror shock horror look at what those nasty Europeans are doing to us now headlines?

This video highlights and explains the confusion regarding whether it applies only to commercial trailers/caravans etc.

It is for non commercial. Updated 26/8

I've had my commercial trailers registered for ages, in fact I was perhaps the 1st to do so. Makes it so much easier when I'm stopped abroad.

They've now started telling folks they need to UK register non commercial 750KG plus trailers, but it was always a requirement under the legislation of the countries you travel through. From the DVLA's own documentation it states

" Although not mandated in the UK, most countries
expect trailers over 750kg gross weight driving
to or through their country, apart from Ireland,
Cyprus, Malta and Spain, to be registered and they
may take enforcement action if the trailer is not
registered. This applies to commercial and
non-commercial trailers (for example, a caravan
or horsebox). "

Thanks for posting this - and the video which clearly shows the DVLA farce.

I'll be getting my trailer registered tomorrow - it's in France, but another 4 weeks until it's hitting the road again.

No, I saw an official GOV e-mail update that gets set to the business.

Watching the video above is really useful and clarifies things, the update is that now all trailers (inc Caravans) over 750kgs must be registered - including ones for personal use.

I haven't read about this anywhere else, although I do not use many news websites, I feel like this is quite a big update and doesn't seem to have been advertised/explained well at all!
