cheap ulez compliant diesel mile muncher
Discussion
Hi,
I currently run a Tesla Model Y Performance, Honda Civic Type R and I have a Fiat 500 Electric
The Fiat is sadly falling apart at just 15k miles and I have agreed to an early termination of the contract. The Civic is almost track spec now (just missing a cage and baffled sump) and basically too exhausting and hardh to use as a daily (but bloody fanatstic as a Sunday blast)
I previously ran a Volvo V90 D4 and I liked its wallowy ways. Now because the Tesla takes most of my mileage living in London, I would like a low maintenance diesel second car for the occasionally longer distance drives/tip runs , or pooled together with my parents. The Tesla is great for long distance with superchargers but always good to have a spare option especially as we pool all the cars anyway
Here’s the kicker: my sister has just turned 17 and will need a car. But we live in London, so this won’t be a case of ‘fronting’ or other dodgy insurance tricks, it will be more a case of her being insured on the family car and I and my family will genuinely drive it more . The tube exists and uni will be a thing.
I’ve had a mess around with insurance quotes - surprisingly, some of the big barges are actually cheaper/ barely more expensive to insure than the normal first car s
t boxes, and because I value motorway manners and big car. However, she is insistent on learning to drive manual so narrows the pool somewhat.
Maintenance is not a problem as I take a very anal approach to looking after my cars., I did 26k in a year mileage so i would consider high mileage cars.
I have a fairly slim budget but because of ULEZ etc it is not shed territory, i have put it down to these
BMW 520d F10 , can get a good one for £4.5k and the B47 engine is less scary, but manual in a 5 series? Terrible?
BMW 420d GC F36 - as above, but more expensive
Audi A5 original model - facelift, cheap but looking dated
Jaguar XE/XF - terrifying Ingenium?
Audi A4 avant B9
Mercedes C220d - again manual Merc just sounds wrong.
Have considered Golf etc but i like the look of the F10 the most.

Why does it need to manual? Things like DMF can prove costly vs a conventional auto.
