Tyres for Z3 M Roadster/ Coupe
Discussion
I need a set of four for my Roadster. Had intended to get a set of Michelin Pilot Sports, but that seems impossible. There seem to be very limited options for premium brands, for the rear in particular.
The car has Dunlops on currently and the Sport Maxx RT2 is an option, but only if I put 95 load rated tyres on the rear and then a choice of 91 or 94 on the front.
Everything seems to be load rated to carry 2,000kg of electric batteries around these days, or run flat.
I don’t remember it being this hard when I had one of these cars back in 1999….(when these wheels were considered big!).
What are people using (that are currently available)?
Many thanks

They're making almost everything in XL rating rating now as it's simpler/cheaper to produce the same profile in as few as possible variations.
If it's the standard 17" sizes (225/45r17 + 245/40r17) then you should be able to get one of the following 'premium' options:
They may not all be in the exact load index you want, but as long as they're equal to or above what you need, then there should be no issue.
Of course, availability and retailer procurement choices may also be stopping you getting what you want.
This is what's available at Camskill (as an example):

Yes, I've run into that one. They're all SUV tyres with stiff sidewalls and can be used on other vehicles.
What I don't understand is how "XL" adds anything to the usual "load rating" which is still used as well.
Just means thicker sidewalls usually, so they ride a bit firmer, may make steering inputs slightly quicker, and may be a bit heavier. What I don't understand is how "XL" adds anything to the usual "load rating" which is still used as well.

Thanks - the challenge seems to be availability and getting the same tyre back and front….
I've not spent a lot of time looking, but Camskill seem to have the Bridgestone Potenza Sport and Vredestein Ultrac+ available in both sizes.Blackcircles.com have the following in both sizes (popular mid-range/premium brands/makes only):
- Continental UltraContact
- Bridgestone Potenza S001
- Dunlop SP Sport Max TT
- Falken Azensis FK520
- Kumho Ecsta Sport PS72
- Pirelli P-Zero Asummetrico
- Toyo Proxes Sport 2
- Vredestein Ultrac+
- Yokohama Advan Sport V105
https://www.blackcircles.com/tyres/245-40-17
...and I've seen various sizes (17/18/19") of the above compounds used on Z4s (Ms and non-Ms).

This is really frustrating. I’m on the Protyre website…. For the rear tyre ‘good news, we’ve found 13 tyres’. Except that 10 of these are limited stock, enquire’…. And the Dunlops, which were showing as available to purchase, when I got to check out they tell me not available at your chosen garage (which was one of the first things they asked me to input).
It really shouldn’t be this hard to spend £500….

Well, I'm taking their stock status as shown on the website. If that's all lies, then there's not a lot we can do.
I even ordered a set of Continental AllSeasonContact 2 for my daily driver, and on 2 occasions the older version (much worse, same price) was delivered...and finally they admitted they website was incorrect and they had no scheduled delivery of the newer model.
Luckily it was for my second set of wheels, so I could just say no.
