2015 Mini One 1.2 start-up rattle intermittent behaviour
Discussion
The car has only done 35k miles but a few times on cold startup has a horrid death rattle from under the bonnet which stops after 20 seconds or so. For the rest of that day there’s no rattle. It seems to occur if the car is left for a few days which may reflect that any oil on the timing chain has returned to the sump so on starting for a short period before oil is splashed on the chain the chain loose side is hitting the casing.
Oddly the problem has only started after about 500 miles after a full service with a non-Mini garage on the Isle of Wight. (Snows have closed down their garage). Checking the invoice both filter and oil are approved for the car so I can’t complain.
I’m concerned that the problem might get worse and lead eventually to the clatter being there when driving. Would replacing just the chain tensioner c£20 be worth trying? Is the hex bolt accessible for DIY?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

It could be the grade of oil. Or have you checked the oil level recently.
We live on the island too, and I would hesitate buying a MINI or BMW again since Snows shut. We currently have an F55 Cooper D, but maybe not again having owned MINIs and BMWs for probably the last 20 years.....
Where did you go for the service?? I use Advanced Automotive in Ryde. They seem okay.

What you describe sounds like either one of 2 things to me.
Don't know if it is the same but earlier ones had a timing chain tensioner that if wearing did exactly that, simple job to swap if that is the case.
Aside of that hydraulic tappets make the same sound for a few seconds if the oil in them drains out when left.

I used Harbour Garage, Cowes. It certainly is a coincidence that within 500 miles of a full service with a different garage I have this problem. The invoice for the service shows the oil filter fitted was a Crosland 501110508 and the oil 5W30 ref MAH050. A check online said both are acceptable to BMW Mini.We live on the island too, and I would hesitate buying a MINI or BMW again since Snows shut. Is that oil thinner than others equally approved?
I can’t see the oil level on the car as it doesn’t have a dipstick!
I have to rely on the dashboard warning system which shows no issue or other engine management problem. The electronic check shows ok and the oil was changed only a few months ago.
I too am disappointed Snows have ceased operations here and doubt I’d buy another Mini.

That’s interesting. I’m finding difficulty in getting my new garage Harbour, Cowes and Sixers in Newport, IW to quote me for replacing just the tensioner. A YouTube video shows it’s possible DIY and the part is readily available for about £30 whilst it seems any garage will charge £200 for labour to do what is similar to replacing a spark plug! I can’t be sure it’s feasible to get to the bolt head with my socket set.Don't know if it is the same but earlier ones had a timing chain tensioner that if wearing did exactly that, simple job to swap if that is the case.
