With a few exceptions are motorway services any better now? The void between those who get it right and those who don’t is huge.

For those from down Sarf, who may not be aware of its existence.

Looks like an example of design from the ‘socialist school of architecture’. That said it should be preserved.

Never been but for me it would be worth visiting, its my knind of thing.

At least the tower is listed, just not in use due to fire regulations. Needs a clever solution and a lot of money to bring it back into use though, probably not economical so will just remain as is which is a shame.

February 1980, the only time I ever stopped there for a breakfast.
Meeting up with my then boss on my way to start my first day on Heysham nuclear power station, which was still in build.

Be good if we could just open it up regardless of its capacity for current fire regs. eg have a sign on the stairs on the way up or something smile

I've always looked at it from the motorway and wanted to go up.

Listed structures can be exempted from fire regs or have variations; it could have an inflatable chute fitted to provide emergency egress as is commonly used on ferries and cruise ships.
