Cracked windscreen drama's
Discussion
In a bit of a catch 22 jam with my S3 Exige
Basically driving down the A127 and some highways tipper merges in front of me and fired a huge rock/stone at my windscreen which has cracked it
Been on the phone to my insurance (Admiral) who gave me a reference number for autoglass, paid my £100 excess and booked in at the centre up the road. Happy days or so I thought......
They have since called back this evening and cancelled the appointment as apparently the front clam needs removing to fit a new screen and this is something that they won't touch.
Dialema now is if the car is taken elsewhere to get its clam removed I will then have to get it trailored back to autoglass as they state a mobile unit cannot fit these screens.
All of the above is a lot of cost which I don't think will be covered on my glass cover (Need to call Admiral to clarify)
Anyone had a screen replaced recently and able to give me some pointers on how you went about it?
I have applied a temp fix for now to hopefully stop it spreading any further, and of course the MOT is due in a few weeks

Watching this with interest.....
After 40k hard miles my windscreen is very pitted. Not looking forward to the day it needs changing
That is the only blessing in this faff is mine has dome 37k and it is like looking out at a starry night sky. So will be glad of that bonus of a fresh screen! After 40k hard miles my windscreen is very pitted. Not looking forward to the day it needs changing

Clam doesn’t need full removal, just loosening, but you want someone who knows what they’re doing.
Have you checked SELOC?
/dramas
I will give it a look. My local specialist is hanger 111.Have you checked SELOC?

Will give them a call. If admiral will pay them for the job that may be the best solution.
If they would do it mobile i would be half tempted to loosen the clam myself!

There is no reason why it is not a mobile job. What if you'd told them the clam is off? They would have no choice but to do it mobile. Will give them a call. If admiral will pay them for the job that may be the best solution.

Back in the nineties the only depot jobs were TVRs and the like. All this 'fitting centre only' status is mainly because they're understaffed and are trying to save on fuel. If the base fitter hits a tight spot, he can call on someone in the branch to give him a hand.
When I arrange involved jobs like these I always have a conversation about the clam before the event. Most owners will loosen it off and some will leave the car with their preferred specialist and I liaise with them.

Thanks for the info. With a man like Glassman I am assuming you know the ins and outs and are in the trade!Back in the nineties the only depot jobs were TVRs and the like. I thought maybe they had more equipment at the depot which was why they were asking. Seems not then.
To be fair I will have a look at what is involved in loosening the clam enought to get acsess. If it is not too involved I could give it a go.
