Just the girlfriend and I for a week. No more than four hours flying, preferably under three

Like culture, museums, walking, activities far more than lying on a beach

Last year we split between Naples and Amalfi and far prefered Naples

Seville, Granada and Cordoba. Fly to Seville and then get the train to the other places.

Just back from a week in Malta and loved it.
Lots of culture, some amazing towns, great beaches, friendly people.

Highly recommend.

How about Rome? Still warm but not as hot as August and not full of people like in other parts of the year. Two hour flight time from most of the UK and you could combine it with Florence as it is a quick train ride away.

Madrid has plenty of culture, Toledo nearby is nice for a trip.

Somewhere I never really wanted to go, Ibiza, the girlfriend took her god daughter last week, the other side from the party side, from her experience of the place, will look it up if you want as cannot remember the name, the hotel was excellent, the video she sent me, we have decided to go back for my birthday at the end of September.

Temps quoted as 16 at night 23 average during the day, I looked up car rental and can get a little runaround for 35 euro a week, or something as big as an X-Trail for 70.

We’re currently on the Côte d’Azur near Cannes. Weather is wonderful, not too many tourists, lots to see and do.

If your happy with popular tourist destinations then Athens or Istanbul are just within your maximum flight time.

Closer to home both Prague and Budapest have enough going on to spend a week in.

Croatia. Base yourself in split and do some travelling/island hopping. Still nice weather generally and very few tourists. I’m biased as I live there though!

Sorrento.

If you haven't done Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Yep, we’ve been twice at the start of October and it’s been superb.

In addition to the previous recommendations, I'd also suggest asking your local travel agency. You don't have to buy from them (if you don't want to) but chances are they know all the good places.

(I get all my holidays from my chosen independent travel agency. Saves me all the hassle)

So you prefer a city break? There's loads of European options, where else have you been before?

Northern Italy? Base yourself at the southern end of Lake Garda and you can easily visit Verona, Venice, Milan etc and towns and walks around the lake.

That is a really good call. many years ago me and the first Mrs BVD stayed in Garda and did exactly that.

Not sure what weather is like in September though, we were there end May and was lovely.
