4K HDR movies unwatchable on Sky Glass 2 TV
Discussion
I was quite happy with our new Sky Glass TV it was decent for the usual TV in HD BBC1, ITV, CH4. DAZN in HD
I have Ultra HD switched on in our contract and also have 4K available in Netflix and Disney. Every movie I have tried to watch in UHD HDR is appalling and much worse quality than any other content. Zero pop and shine, indistinct and washed out. Initially I had thought it was just a rubbish TV for movies but there must be something else going on.
Last night I was just flipping through the channels and a HD movie was on BBC and looked way better than any 4K movie I have seen so far. I noticed 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was also showing in HD on CH4 and again it was pretty good. Watched some 4K demo content on YouTube and it was stunning.
Tried all sorts of modes and custom settings but any UHD movie content is just genuinely awful.
Anyone got a clue what is going on?

Wednesday on Netflix just has no pop at all, completely washed out.
Dr Strange 2 on Disney+ in 4K Ultra IMAX looks better but the same scene is better if I watch it on a YouTube 4K clip on the TV
I am reading that Sky has an issue processing some HDR content. Will be interesting to see what the F1 looks like this afternoon.

I remember when I had SKY Q that it would not do Dolby Vision or HDR10. So I usually used the TV apps instead. Also do you have version 1 or 2 of the SKY Glass and do you have the Sky Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos® pack? And are the TV settings correct to display them all? I'd suggest the issue is TV related, not apps. Easiest way to check is see if someone has a Firestick you can borrow and try watching via that, to determine whether it's hardware or software issue.Dr Strange 2 on Disney+ in 4K Ultra IMAX looks better but the same scene is better if I watch it on a YouTube 4K clip on the TV

I’ve got the traditional Sky Q box and a UHD HDR LG TV. Sports in HDR UHD via the dish look brilliant, especially when compared to the HD channel.
I downloaded Back To The Future in UHD HDR and that too looked amazing, but in some scenes you could clearly see the make up on Marty’s face and the line under his chin where it became his normal skin tone.
Netflix 4K is very good.
Are you sure you’re getting UHD content, sky don’t broadcast UHD , apart from Sports channels, from what I can work out and the content must be selected via download. I don’t have UHD movies for example, I switch to the movie channels and it gives me the option to download in UHD.

I find going for the UHD non hdr - version works best for me (on a UST projector)
This on Sky Q...
There's also settings in some of the apps to switch off HDR but seems to be hit or miss if it works correctly..
Personally, I don't really enjoy the HDR content, just seems dull and less vibrant, obviously that comes down to how good the display is.
I also prefer The Firestick for a lot of the app based content as you can directly switch of HDR in the Firestick settings which then seems to override what the apps are doing, so everything is bright and err fun

I have given up with the 4K side and actively seek out HD content if I can.
My wife loves the TV as it is good for regular TV content and super convenient with just the single simple remote and it does have that going for it.
But yes, Sky are selling a product that cannot handle the content they provide.

It will be the HDR that’s the problem - when the TV detects it it will switch to a different mode.
You will need to adjust the settings when it’s in HDR mode to bring it up to scratch. Alternatively you can change the settings so it won’t accept the HDR signal (but will display in 4k still)
