RC boat - where to use?

Never had an RC boat before but got donated one from a friend, quite keen to take the small one out to go try it but not sure where it's allowed or a way to check?

IC or electric? Lots of ponds ban IC now, but lots of electric clubs about.

No boating lake nearby? Wear shorts, it will inevitably conk out in the middle and taking your trousers off to retrieve the thing may scandalise passers-by.

Rather than shorts and a wade in to unknown depths to retrieve a stalled boat, I find a length of fishing line with a weight on the end can be used to retrieve boats in these circumstances.
