My laptop's screen has gone virtually blank - just showing a mainly white screen with some grey vertical lines and bands. The laptop itself is still functioning and I'm using a separate monitor at the moment.

I've tried the usual "turning off and on again" routine but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions - apart from buying a new laptop (which will be happening soon anyway).

it might be possible to just replace the screen, or the ribbon cable that send signal to it

There's no obvious cable connection between the keypad and the screen. I assume the wire must run through one of hinges that allows the screen to be opened and closed.

The ribbon cable can fray over time, and screens can fail. Usually quite straightforward and inexpensive to replace.
Do you have a local IT repair shop, or local guy of Facebook? Easy job for them.

I might give those options a go.

Quite a common failure and as has already been said, it'll be the cable between main board and screen.

The part is likely cheap and easily available, but I would assume you don't have the skills to do it yourself or you wouldn't have posted the question. The majority of the cost to fix it will be labour, and I'd estimate it might cost £150-250 for the work. Opening and repairing these things can be quite time consuming.

With that sort of cost I'd put it towards your new machine rather than repairing the old.

Probably the best option. The machine is at least eight years old now so I had my money's worth from it.

I had a similar thing where the screen flickered but if I moved the angle of ithe screen a bit it stopped flickering There is a cable which does go through the hinges and I did try replacing it on mine (a few quid off ebay) but the new one seemed faulty so I put the old one back in and just don't open/close the lid anymore.

Can you not plug into an external monitor or do you travel with it?

What laptop is it? - Any serial / model numbers would be handy - usually a quick look around with the model will yield some useful information as there are quite a few with known issues with ribbon cables as already mentioned.

Local computer shop wanted £180 to replace the screen in my daughters cheap Dell, I bought one from eBay for £33 and did it in 5 minutes. Luckily on these the screen surround just unclips.

If if is the screen cable, these run through the hinge and you may need to take half the laptop apart to replace it.

Screen may also be glued in or the bevel may be glued in so also a possible nightmare.
