Air India has announced a one-time waiver on rescheduling charges for passengers with confirmed bookings to and from Kathmandu, as the airport remains closed due to ongoing protests across Nepal. The waiver applies to tickets issued up to 9 September for travel until 11 September.
The airline emphasised that the safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority, urging travellers to check for updates before planning their journey.

She's just called her contact in KT now.
It's terrible apparently, a brand new hotel has been burned out, the police headquarters and govt buidlings also. They can't put anything out as the FB are also out of action.
Sounds worse than reported in the media.
He's calling back as the line was bad - I will update with anything further

It sounds like some (if not all) of the protesters who were shot were school students wearing uniform. Allegations that they were shot by snipers. Some harrowing footage online.
The government called it Gen Z protests (Gen Z are older that school students) and tried to attribute it to their switching off all social media. Though it seems that the social media blackout came after protests at corruption, which was then followed by the shootings.
The PM resigned and it seems that the police and military are cxalling rfor calm - suggesting that the politicians are nowhere to be seen.
In fact rumours are that the finance minister was mobbed and beaten in the street.
No idea how verifiable this stuff is but, even by Nepalese standards of precarious goverments, this is wild.

I've just listened in on a conversation my wife had with her cousin in KTM this afternoon. He said the demo was initially relatively peaceful and focussed on corruption, though the social media issue was an aggravating grievance. He said the protestors were then joined by a number of uniformed 'radicals' (not uniformed school children) who then started to throw missiles. The police then retaliated and the more moderate protestors then joined in and all hell let loose. The government called it Gen Z protests (Gen Z are older that school students) and tried to attribute it to their switching off all social media. He said that every police station inc headquartes have been burned down including the new Hilton hotel and the main government building.
My wife has first hand experience of the corruption and bribes required simply to conduct business and day to day affaris in Nepal and get officials to simply do their job. It makes our politicians look like amateurs.
Very sad as it's a lovely country with mostly lovely people

I was fortunate to visit Kathmandhu many years ago (nearly 30). My experience of corruption started at the border where my friend and I discovered our visas were suddenly not valid. Cash changed hands and off we went.
Wonderful city, though the poverty was high in places. Wished I'd spent more time there. Still have the khukuri I bought from a street vendor and carefully carried back through India (another vborder bribe!) and to the UK. A spotter saw a policeman coming and the vendor upped sticks and vanished....
I do hope that your wife's family remain safe and unharmed.

Saw this (and the liveleak vidoes) on Reddit earlier. I mean the police/army/whomever were actually sniping people in the head on the street!!! absolutely crazy state of affairs.
Sounds like Ukraine during the Euromaidan protests. Started with students nit getting very far, but when the police moved in & started cracking heads, then everyone joined in to jump the police who in turn just started shooting people. Is liveleak still going? I thought it shut itself down years ago.
Reading the current articles I notice a lot of them have dropped any mention of the protests being about corruption and nepotism and are instead going with the "now overturned social media ban."

- Have taken down the screenshots as they were huge on my PC screen. But yeah, mention of corruption & nepotism seem to be missing from later articles.

This seems like something the UK will end up doing in the near future - if only we weren't so lazy.
How would doing this improve the UK? We won't cut in-work benefits and we won't cut heating allowance, we've canned HS2, decomissioned some Navy ships we can't afford to crew, and we don't want to house asylum seekers in hotels or houses or anywhere and we need more prisons, police and more beds in the NHS & a funded pension system and a way to look after our elderly but also somehow cut taxes on workers and reduce our deficit spending while keeping inflation low...So lets burn down parliament and the high court?
People need a lot less to lose before it gets that bad.
