There is a proposal to remove the limit on amount that can be paid by contactless card payments.

I don't think this is a good idea.
Personally, I wouldn't want more that about £150 for contactless (particularly for a debit card).
If there was (is?) the ability to set the level within the banking app I wouldn't set mine to unlimited or whatever the credit limit / account balance is.

Tbh I was never a particular fan of contactless full stop... Seemed like a solution looking for a problem, and a thieves' paradise.

I use it now, but not a fan of this move too.

Seems ill advised and solving a problem that doesn’t exist.

I can pay for my weekly supermarket shop with a contactless card, and for anything larger I use my phone or spend a couple of seconds typing a PIN.

I don’t see who this benefits

Article says this will bring cards in line with payment by smart phone. But smart phones need pin or biometric data to log in. So not bringing "in line" at all.

Most banks allow you to set your own lower limit if you wish and I would imagine that feature will still be available if they uncap or raise the limit further.

I think the £100 U.K. limit is about right, the €50 wide EU limit should be raised to a similar level

But unlimited I don't think so

A Tin Foil Hat owner might wonder if it is all part of the plan to 'sell' / roll-out scanning of Digital IDs for all purchases in the planned Panopticon hell - it would be so convenient to just tap your ID and then tap your unlimited contactless card.

Everything in one place?

Great idea imo.

The largest sum of money most people need to pay in a semi regular basis is a full tank of petrol. Having a contactless limit above that seems pointless. I don't need to pay for a sofa contactlessly

Watching this item on BBC Breakfast. Apparently each bank will set its own limit.
FCA think it will reduce queueinq times. Biggest hold ups that I’ve experienced are people scrolling to find and set up their payment apps.

Where are people regularly queuing to pay for products that are over £100? The only places you really see queues are for stuff like McDonalds, coffee shops or petrol stations.
This seems a solution to a problem that doesn't exist

You kind of already have this with foreign transactions, often doesn't have the limit even if your home country for the card would.

I paid nearly $600 contactless in Canada recently, guys at the till didn't believe me when I said it'd probably work.

How many times has your account been compromised since their introduction in 2007?

What could possible go wrong...?

I'd support the limit being raised to £150 or so to cover a trip to the supermarket but don't really see the need for it to be any higher tbfh

If they really wanted to bring it into line they’d go to the Spanish system of contactless & PIN. Small transactions generally go through fine, but anything that would require Chip & PIN here requires you to enter the PIN on the terminal.

I set mine to £20

Anything over needs the pin.

This was after my wallet was stolen and the thief used to buy a Greggs lunch and £75 of cigs from the Piccadilly bus station spar when it was the default £100

I suspect this is allowing firms to stop taking cash. So contavtless only no cash payments
