As per the title.

The V70 we've had for close on three years and 20K miles. Does a few 250 mile runs a year but more frequently it's a 20 mile round trip to the shops and back which isn't good for a diesel.
It replace a string of Volvo 940 which I loved. Wife didn't. She loves this car, it's super comfortable, bigger than a 940 but doesn't carry as much but it's still a big estate car and it's a lot lighter to drive then the 940. It also has a VED of about £35 and does about 50mpg.

So to replace it I need to find an estate with at least a much carrying capacity (three of us plus two dogs), manual (definitely), petrol (definitely). Would happily go for another Volvo but they all seem to be diesel in the larger Volvo range.

If I said the V70 +£5K that would take me to about £12K. Might add a little more if necessary but it's the family car so will get parked in Tesco etc and get the dogs in the back.

This the first night of contemplating a change so I'm open to suggestions, thanks.

Superb/Passat 1.5TSI were the first cars to spring to mind or a Mazda 6 if you can make the smaller boot and rear seat space work for you.

Remember a friends Passat about 15 years ago, was quite a capacious car. Will have a look thanks. Definitely need the space, it's the old story, sometimes it's just one driver in an empty car, other times it's 3 plus two dogs or 2 plus a load of equipment.

Looking at autotrader, all the more recent V70 & V90 are diesel and most V90 are auto which is another no-no.

Is it not cheaper to hang on to a great car and simply save for the expected EGR or DPF issue at some point?

I got rid of my V70 D3 (160k miles, I was doing nearly 30k a year, and it was early D3 so not ULEZ) but wish I had not.

Yeah, good point - I am doing the same with my leggy 170k 318d - owes me nothing and have the bork fund to fix the diesel stuff if needed, but it keeps on trooping, only does around 6k a year now with Mrs 757 (not ideal for it really, but a tank full of wynns xtreme cleaner every 10k keeps it sweet...and seemed to of fixed my EGR EML error it had recently) - but it still punches out great economy and easy 900miles to a tank and is also £35 VED.

That is the option guys, starts, stops, steers and lights up. Few minor car park marks which I don't worry about, no rust, decent economy etc. Wife sometimes has the dog(s) on the rear seat rather than the rear luggage area as one of them isn't a good traveller etc. can use it to the tip without a worry. She likes the car (I'm not so). Maybe until I see something that grabs my attention......

I’d be looking at an Audi A4 / A6 Avant or BMW 3 / 5 series, you’ll find them an absolute revelation after your Volvo.

I appreciate completely personal preference, but auto all day long in a practical daily driver.

Only marginally see the point in manual in something sporty, although even that now is borderline given how great new autos are now.

The day after purchasing an auto you and your wife will be thinking it’s a revelation.

Sorry but no.
Had a Merc SL500 4 speed auto neither my wife nor I got on with it. Sold it after 6 months.
Briefly had a Volvo 780 4 speed auto and found it OK but wished it were manual
Currently have a Volvo 1800ES with a 3 speed auto box (OK it's not a modern auto) and wish it were a manual.

I get everyone has their own preferences, and I do respect your opinion, but…..

You aren’t comparing like for like, you are talking about dinosaur technology, and if that’s your exposure and experience I understand your reticence.

Drive anything with the ZF 8 speed, or really any fairly recent auto box and I can’t see how you wouldn’t be a convert in 5 minutes.

There is a reason finding something manual is difficult now.
