Boxster 981s vs 718s
Discussion
Hello — I’ve been thinking about getting a Boxster and have a max budget of about £35,000. I’d prefer PDK (haven’t driven a manual since 2001 and don’t plan to start again). At first I was looking at a 2016/17 718, but I’m now also considering the older 981 (ideally an S).
This would be a third car for me, likely garage-kept and doing only 2–3,000 miles/year. I’d really value input from current and past owners on:
What maintenance or renewals I should insist are done (brakes, spark plugs, PDK service, tyres, roof seals, etc.).
Any recurring issues you’d look out for on a 981 S.
Which would you buy — a well-spec’d 718 or a cared-for 981 S — and why?
Were there meaningful changes / facelifts / improvements during the 981’s life I should be aware of?
Thanks — any tips, horror stories or positive experiences much appreciated.

Probably better off asking in the general Porsche area
I don’t know of anything about roof seals so maybe you made that one up
My 981 I’ve done most maintenance in last few years myself but I understand that’s not typical
I’ve not experienced a turbo version but that’s the big difference unless you go for a chunky 4 litre
Then the discussion is probably around suspension and wheels
Fashion nowadays is for massive wheels but I’ve gone the other way from 20 to 19 and now 18 and my car has the simple passive suspension with highest ride height available from Porsche
