Now that TVR have decided to use letters and numbers for their cars rather than mythological names, I wonder if anyone can shed light on what some of the letters mean. For example the T440R and T350C - what does the T, R and C stand for? I assume that the C is for Coupe.

You assume correctly! "T" is for Targa and "R" is for Racing, JIMHO of course...

I would assume the T is for Tuscan and/or Tamora. This if course means total confusion as they both start with T

T440R = Tuscan R(acing) with 440bhp
T350C = Tamora Coupe (with 350bhp)
so
T400C = ? Tuscan or Tamora coupe (with 400bhp)

And they seemed so good at coming up with names.

Cerbera/Tuscan/Tamora/Griffith etc provoke far stronger emotion than something that sounds like it is a citroen T440R.....or was that BX19TDS......

The "TRD" always made me laugh... "turd"... - the ironic naming department strikes again!

Yes, I preferred names too. However, I suppose we should be grateful they haven't gone down the route of the AV industry. Does anyone fancy a TVR DLA-G3010Z? And how would it compare with the TVR CMP4121HDE?

Loads of cars have had dodgy names...

"Nova" - means "no go" in Spanish (literal)
"Fuego" means "shit" in some languages...
"Starion" ... dodgy Japanese wording for "Stallion"

Bound to be a list on the web somewhere...

With the risk of coming back on-topic in mind...

What I want to know is WHY they decided to start using strange numbers and letters. What did THEY think was wrong with the proper naming of cars.

We seem to think it is a bad idea, but they seem to be convinced otherwise. One can only presume that there is a good reason for it.

Anyone got any ideas why they might change the naming conventions....and on existing cars as well? (TuscanR is the only one that has actually been renamed isn't it?)

I don't know the real reason, but I suspect it might help in motorsport homologation issues if they can show which models (and of which power) have been built.

Now, whether the T400R actually ships with a 400bhp engine (rather than just selling all T440Rs) remains to be seen , but at least they have a record of the 400bhp model being sold in sufficient quantities to satisfy the FIA or whoever. It is a whole lot clearer than having a Tuscan R, Tuscan S and Tuscan on the price list.

Maybe they just took a look at the PistonHeads thread on proposed new model names (from a couple of months back) and decided that there were no more really good names of horrible mythical beasties to be had. Besides, there is a long history of letter/number model names - M, S2/3/4, V8S, 350I, 390/400SE, 420/450SEAC....etc etc

(Always wanted to quote myself...)

When on the stand at NEC, one of the sales guys said to me that the T350C was a coupe and that there was a T350T targa in the medium term pipeline...

Was he just making it up as he went along?
