Hi all

I am doing some modification to my garage and I have made a small board with some sockets and a VFD on, fed from a live from the consumer unit.

In my VFD thread, somebody suggested I use an isolator before the board so I could switch off the entire input which made sense. So I bought a brand new one of these:

I fitted this. With the inbound wires from the circuit board on the supply poles and the wires to my socket on the ‘load’ poles.

Thing is. It doesn’t work. Doesn’t pass current. Diagnosis with multimeter:

1. Switch OFF no continuity between L supply and L load. No continuity between N supply and N load

2. Switch ON successful continuity between L supply and L load. NO continuity between N supply and N load.

The fuse inside has continuity end to end. I have fitted a wago connector to join the wires for now and that works. Socket and VFD both power up.

So…. Is this suitable for the job of isolating a double socket and a VFD? Did I blow it up myself? Or did I just get unlucky and Amazon sent me a duff?

Get a replacement, from a better brand.

This sort of thing never used to happen, common now.

I tried to fit one of these once and called a sparky to look at it.

Turns out I pushed the cable too far in to the terminal and did the screw up on the sleeving rather than the bare wire.

Common or Neutral seems to be the problem, pop the facing plate off so at least we can see the terminals and do a post mortem smile

Never even thought about that. Here’s the mess within as I lifted the plate
