I've been thinking on what brake upgrade to do on my Griff. I like the Brembo upgrade, although it's expensive the callipers look the dogs. The colour of my Griff is Rosso Pearl, so a clash there with red callipers maybe, what do you think?
I would want the same callipers on the rear as well and bigger disks as the standards look naff behind the wheels.
Is it a problem to change the rear callipers because of the handbrake and the braking set-up of the car?

I know of the site godspeed but are there any other sites selling smart callipers and disks that would fit my Griff?
I'm doing the suspension as well, but that's another story.

Cheers.

I think your brakes will be cosworth sierra/scorpio and upgrade discs/pads/calipers available from motor factors off the shelf. may not be so easy to increase diam tho. Rears are same on tuscans so should be up to the job. I fitted grooved/drilled discs to my chim, looked and performed loads better. I used 'need for speed' (sorry lost webb addr)they had tvr's on their listings to. Susp parts aswell.

The rears are up to the job but look crap. Could the disks and callipers be changed?

I suppose plenty of money will get you what you want but as you thought, the rear callipers incorporate the hand brake so it's an expensive upgrade. Increasing disc size to fill the wheels and changing callipers front and rear could easily mess up the balance. Even the experts sometimes experiment a few times before getting it right.

Not exactly "bling" but what about fitting drilled and grooved discs, increasing front disc size to 285mm and painting the callipers?

Painting the callipers? Cheaper, but too cheap really.
If I can't have matching disks and callipers on front and rear (I'm movable on the disks) I probably won't bother.
I just think it would improve the looks no end.

What about increasing the front disk size and buying some brembo callipers front and rear, is that possible?

After further investigation it seems that changing the size of the rear disks might cause trouble. I would still like to buy some decent callipers to put on there though. Can you just buy them and just fit them or is there some fettling to do?

Cheers.

The problem you'll have is getting something that looks nice ..

I've been looking into this and I agree the brembos are the nicest looking .. best route will probably then be to get the front and rear calipers of something like an EVO and make some adaptors up to fit them to your car .. will have to check a few evos out to see what they do with the handbrake though, as the std ford caliper does both foot and hand brake in the one unit.

If you go for bigger discs/4 pot for the front, it's probably best to increase the discs (with original calipers) at the rear too to maintain the right balance. I think it depends on the size you chose for the front: if you go for 285mm, you can leave the rear as it is; if you go for 300mm or more, use larger discs for the rear too.

No not really. The brake needs to have a mechanical handbrake to pass the MOT and there are virtually zero performance callipers that have such a fitting.

I must say 'appearance' is an unusual basis for a brake upgrade. Whilst I understand you wanting the finished result to look good, the first criteria must surely be 'do they perform well'. In any case the rears need to be balanced with the fronts and simply fitting a set of Brembo 4 x pot calipers to the rear would not work for the reasons already stated. You may as well keep the standard sliding caliper rear brake as it has the handbrake assembly and performs the job required of it. You could fit larger rear discs as I have done, you could also 'tart-around' with the balance valve if you wanted. There's lots that can be done but think beyond just the looks... Rich...

Obviously the upgrade has to be just that - an upgrade in braking performance etc. But nothing wrong with making it look better as well.

Humm... , from your initial comment I got the impression perhaps that you were just a tad more concerned that the 'Brembo' red might clash with 'Rosso Pearl' sorry

That is a worry also. Do they do yellow brembo callipers? Now, let me think, yellow and rosso.
If I can't get what I want then it will be toys out the pram time.

I don't know that much about car mechanics so go easy on me. The picture I've posted is of an Evo which has brembo callipers on the rear. This car has a handbrake and has performance callipers all round. So how do they do it?

The rear wheel of an EVO.

You have a small drum brake in the centre of the disk. Just like Cerbera's and other Supercars.

Whip a rear wheel off this weekend and a have a look at the workings. The caliper pictured is a 2 x pot caliper i.e. there is a piston either side of teh disc which squeeze the disc. On the Griff's rear calipers their only one piston on the outside and as it squeezes the caliper slides in from the other side to grip the disc - a bit like the difference between side-pull and centre-pull brakes on bikes! The handbrake is cable operated and works by pulling the caliper onto the disc manually.
