Awesome Chevy Camaro road racer for sale
Owned by Henry Cole, with race pedigree and a spicy small block under the hood - for less than a new 520i
It isn’t hard to see why historic motorsport appeals to so many. Away from the Goodwood glamour and in the real world of racing classics, it offers up a simpler experience compared to modern competition cars. Simpler to start, simpler to drive, simpler to enjoy. But thanks to the wild engines of yesteryear, still massively fast and properly exciting to compete with. Who wouldn’t want to race with a V8 that needs oversteer for its best lap time?
This is exactly the sort of thing we’re talking about. It’s a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, a car that arrived in the UK in the early '90s and which has enjoyed a 30-year career in historic motorsport over here. So the next owner could very much enjoy as intended - there’s no need to be precious about this old car, as it’s been built to be driven as hard as possible.
Built to a very exciting spec, too. Money has been spent generously over the decades, including £60,000 between 2012 and 2019. That included an engine rebuild in 2014, the 5.7 now featuring a forged crank, TRW pistons and Eagle con-rods. The power of the 350 cubic inch V8 reaches the rear wheels via a close ratio of GM’s Muncie M22 gearbox. AKA the rock crusher, because it sounded like an old truck gearbox. Seems appropriate.
Nowadays, it presents as perhaps the best of both worlds Camaro. Having been stripped and raced in the past, but with some amenities still present, it promises a sharper, sillier, wilder on-road experience than any comparable muscle car. Equally, it probably wouldn’t take much more than getting the race bits (seats, cage, harnesses, extinguisher) up to date for a bonafide classic racer.
Old cars being old cars - and those of us wanting to race being unbearably competitive - there’ll likely be other bits and bobs to sort, however it’s going to take much less to make this race ready than starting with an unmodified car. Assuming you’d even want to meddle with an untouched '60s Camaro these days…
You just know it’s going to be an absolute riot in any scenario, on road or track. There’s additional intrigue with this Chevy, too, as it was most recently owned by Henry Cole. You know, the guy from the telly: Junk & Disorderly, Shed & Buried, The Motorcycle Show and so on. He’s well known to the selling dealership, another interesting owner in this Camaro’s fascinating UK story. Whatever the next custodian chooses for the Chevy, it promises an unforgettable classic experience. And if you ever need a second driver…
