Oil tank removal costs
Discussion
My oil heating has broken and I’ve decided to move to an ASHP (I realise all the pros and cons). However I have an oil tank (1000 litre plastic single skin) with 650 litres of oil (and sludge). Any recommendations for removal and indeed estimates as to cost? I presume the 650 litres of oil will cost me to remove, rather than be paid for!
Thanks.
Thanks.
I'm intrigued at this because I'm sat WFH at my childhood home where my Mum still lives, her neighbour has a similar tank that I could see from my window every day when I opened the curtains as a kid. It is decades out of use but they've just let ivy grow over it to disguise it.
I was chatting to the 78yo owner a while back and he's happy (no kids or dependents) to die and let his estate/any future owner handle it because he doesn't want the hassle. Interested in now much it would cost, just out of curiosity.

If you do go down the road of needing a reliable company to do it (not suggesting they're cheap, but were reasonable), we used this firm to remove our split tank, replace with a new one and transfer at least 500 litres of oil in the process. Trustworthy, no faffing and no cowboy behaviour. YMMV.
Caveat, obviously, I can't guarantee they'll be amazing for you. Did a good job for us.

A 1000 litre tank is literally an IBC.
1. Get on FBM and pick up some free 5 gallon drums.
2. Drain the oil out of the IBC and fill empty drums.
3. Sell oil.
4. If it's an IBC, take apart the metal frame
5. Cut up the plastic tank into strips and take to tip.
6. ???
7. Profit.
But none of this should be necessary as the correct solution is to fix your oil boiler before you make a decision which you will live to regret if your house is old.

A business I used to have ended up with a lot of waste hydraulic oil.
Once a month a tanker came came round and vacuumed out the IBC’s and gave us a certificate, it was a few service as they recycled it into some sort of useable product. This stuff would be much more contaminated than your heating oil.
Try that then stick it on gumtree, I’ve twice had mates get rid of (empty) heating oil tanks in the free paper/gumtree and each time it was a farmer that came and took them away, both times with a tractor and trailer despite suburban locations.

Or replace the boiler while you still can. I doubt it is IBC, probably one of those green or black shaped ones that lots of people could reuse.. 1. Get on FBM and pick up some free 5 gallon drums.

I live in an eighties built house, the boiler fitted when built is still here lol, has broken down once, and once after turning the gas off I could not ignite it again. Heating engineer said no chance of getting a new burner first time, new igniter unit second time, I did from Ebay, less than 150 for both, and taking them out of the box and reading the instructions did not bother calling him back.
If there are pros and cons of new fangled things replacing things that have worked for years I do not want them lol.
Did the same thing earlier in the year. Tank was starting to crack.
Posted on Facebook Marketplace, free if everything taken.
2 retired guys had it done later that day - tank drained into 25 litre containers, loaded into their van. 1100 litre tank carried around the house, and strapped onto their trailer.
Only negative was, I thought there was only 300 litres in the tank. Turned out it was close to 700 litres.

Around here there are loads of people on FB trying to flog or give away old oil tanks.
I'm not sure how hard it will be to clean, if it's anything like diesel tanks on yachts, the dirt in there can be a mix of 'bug' living on the fuel and tar-like substances.
You can clean the fuel through a few filters easily enough. Sometimes tanks come clean with a paper towel, other times it's scraping with a chisel.
I've seen bits of old plastic oil tanks used as the cover for log stores.
You might even get it clean enough to make a rainwater store?
I believe there are some amazing enzyme cleaning agents for this kind of thing.
